First select a surface of a brush (control + shift + LMB), or select the whole brush (control + LMB) and then select a texture.

? First load the set of textures you want to choose from. When you find one you like (should appear near the bottem-right part of Radiant), hold down the left Ctrl and Shift keys at the same time and then click on the surface of the brush you want to texture, it should now be selected. Then just left click on the texture you chose to texture that part of the brush.

Remember, you won't see textures in the '2d view' (the view with the grids) you can only see the textures in the 3d view.

so what does it show in the 3d view? when you make a first brush it should have a blueish checkerboard, then when you texture it it should have the texture.

In the 3-d view it shows a red 3-d block(or any brush I use). Is this the problem? If so how do I fix?

lol, you've probably still got it selected, when it faders to red that means you've selected that face/brush. now you need to open your texture and select oen (Left mouse button) then deselect the brush and it'll be textured like you'd see normally ;)
