After The Basic room

I really wanna learn to map but i keep getting stuck. Ive finished all the basic room tutes several times. and ive gotten to make a nice little room...for a basic room.

But i cant go on from there. I wanna take a small step up from there but i dont know where/how to move on.

any suggestions, tuts, links?

i keep getting stuck and give up.

what exactly do you mean, do you want to make a level if so design one on paper first very rough.

Do you know how to add lighting and compile the map etc???

oh no no i can compliel the map add lights player starts just fine but i cant make any more than a room compile it. O.o

i want to learn more than a room, like a house or a room with multiple levels or balcony's get better textures, stuff like that.

i never though of drawing it on paper, i am a good artist, so ill give that a try ty.

move onto adding another room is your logical next step; not making the existing room picture perfect....explore outward.

on the rough draft....always a great idea. i always have a printout of my draft in front of me to check and double check and so i can forgo 'blind' planning.


for beginners wanting to just learn rooming..........simply google image the phrase 'floor plan', copy and print it out. don't worry about all the junk in the original floor plans just pay attention to where the walls, doors, windows, stairs are. use it to learn walls, doorways and windowframes. then simply put a big brush over all of it so the room is inside , select inside, copy it and move the copy 16units above the original; make an opening in the copy on the floor and boom you have two stories........so learn stairs now.

example, try the first floor on this floor plan i found (not the one with the bay window but the upper left room)

Have you seen the video tutorials? The basic room one shows how to make a hallway and other things. Here is the URL.

Also, to add furniture, right click on the 2D screen and go to Static > Furniture and select what you want. To rotate one of the models, hit key N to bring up the entity window. Select a number (angle) button to rotate--hit N again to close the window.

Adding models will help you to get the scale of the room right. Making the room to big is common for beginers. Scale doors and windows to your player_start because it is 96 units tall (six feet in the game).

Add more spawn points (one allied and one axis) to your map. Then compile and put the bsp file in main/maps/dm. Doing that will let you run a multiplayer test sever where you will have sound and weapons.

yes ive seen all the tuts (i started with the vid ones) i can make a very nice little room furnature and what not. i just didnt think a head on my room. Ive never planned like PKM has said. I will spend my next couple of days just drawing up wat i want my map to look like. then i will give it a shot.

my first maps were just houses with a flat grass brush outside and a daylight skybox. eventually i started messing with LOD terrain and doing outdoor maps, which are easier imo.
