Got a question, if you got one harddisc, with 2 stations on it like C and D. Is this called a multiple-boot or is it a dual-boot?
Or what the hell is a multiple or dual-boot?

dual-boot or multiple-boot

partition
I have heard of partitioned hard drives, but normally only one part is used to boot up windows. Maybe you are thinking of a computer with duel CPUs.
Well this is the situation,
My friend tried to get into Safemode, he didn't knew about the F8 key while restarting and found out he could do the same by doing this; start > run > msconfig, then he edited the boot.ini and selected the /SAFEBOOT, then a message appeared if he wanted to restart the system so he pressed ok.
When the PC was restarting an error came up with something like Couldn't restart windows correctly and some stuff like that, with the list of the safemodes and normal mode etc under it. Every mode he selects doesn't work, the PC is restarting again and same stuff is happening.
My guess is that the boot.ini file is messed up that's why this problem he got.
He's not good in stuff like this so he asked me to find out (doh
). Well I found this document:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;330184
And I suppose it would be also fine to use this to fix his problem, but read the manual, at step 5.
He and I don't know what to select and what it means so that why I'm asking this.
Or does someone know if there is an other way to fix this problem or whatever?
Btw he got Windows XP
Many thanks, At0miC
[edit] - What about a startup disk? everybody is talking about it to try this one when u got problems when your pc doesn't start anymore, but I have no idea about it because I've never used one. What is it, how does it work when can I use this and how do I make a startup disk? And would this also fix the problem my friend got? -

boot
Windows 98 had a boot disk that you put in the floppy drive. But XP uses the CD. Here is what the MS fix page you posted says.
To resolve this issue, start the computer from the Windows XP CD, start the Recovery Console, and then use the Bootcfg.exe tool to rebuild the Boot.ini file.
OK, I see what you are talking about. What are the options when you get to step 5? Can you just hit enter at that step?
Your goal is to get a dos prompt--little flashing underline.

If you partisioned your harddrive you could install a second operateing system on the second partision or on a second hard drive and if you did when you start your computer it will ask you which operating system you want to use . They can be like win98 and xp or xp and lynx or even both xp . That is a dual boot I think multiple boot is just the same thing with more operating systems on the same computer . To boot from the xp disk restart your computer and goto the bios usually by pressing delete or f1 when he computer is just starting before the operating system is run . In the bios goto the boot tab and set your computer to boot first from the cd .
Ok thanks for the info
So how can you see how many operations systems you got?
I tried this, I restarted my PC then hitted the F8 key, then I selected to go back to the operation systems menu, and I could only choose: Windows XP Profassional.
What does this mean, that this is a Single-boot?
So I don't understand then why can he only choose from dual or multiple.
tltrude, it's not really clear for me what he sees when step 5, but yesterday he told me he could just input one lettre and there were no other options. So I'm gonna ask later this day.

Ok it's fine now. At step 5 he, he told all kind of stuff but he didn't saw he could just select one option by pressing 1 (c:/windows) so the dual or multiple thingy was not important then, so it wasn't really clear for me because I wasn't there. But it works now, rebuilded his boot.ini and it's good now.
