LOD terrain got a static minimum size which is 512 x 512 units.
If you want to have it smaller, use patch meshes.

Hitting control a, or shift a, don't remember which, will allow you to manipulate LOD terrain. You have to adjust the sliders and hit ok. You can use the 512X512 section of LOD, and merge it into your existing brush work

nah to edit LOD Terrain (or patch mesh, theyre almost the same execpt that patch is more moldable) press V and move the little pink things (vertices) about to change the shape of the LOD (or patch).

to create and mold a patch into a crater, make a brush that you want to turn into a patch and (make sure you are in the "XY" or "top" View in radiant) go to: Curve --> Simple Patch Mesh... and a window should pop up conatining two 3's. hit ok and you sud have a patch the size of the brush you had. again, make sure that before you turn it into a patch (if you want to make a crater ;)) that you are in the "top" or "xy" view in radiant.
To Edit a Patch mesh, press V (you can remeber the key as "Vertices") and move the vertices about to form the shape you want.
The main uses of the patch mesh are:
cliffs
curvy roads
smaller terrain features (a trench, for example)
rubble (LOD can be used for this as well)
Odd shapes that brushes cannot fit into.

To create and edit in LOD terrain:
make a brush of any size, go to LOD Terrain --> Create From Brush and you should see a patch of LOD in front of you. To edit it press V and move the vertices about. With LOD you can only move a vertex up and down(Z axis). Side to side does not work.
The main uses of LOD are:
Terrain,
Rubble(patch mesh is also good for smaller rubble),
craters

i guess this is the closest thing to a tutorial :P
i hope this helps ^^
