Your system is way ahead of mine splaetos but I set out to be able to upgrade a while back, got an msi neo2 and athlon 64 3000 socket 939.

Im still running xp pro never tried 64, been waiting to see how it was working out, is it working? Will it run most of my stuff now ?

I play spearhead, bf2, and united offensive.

but mainly im using flash and photoshop, can I run them?

And where do I get myself a copy of 64, is it still a beta trial thing?

edit: and your sig was always blurry :)

Windows XP x64 is just about the same as XP and will run most apps that is not the problem the problem is hardware drivers . Your 32 bit apps won't run faster . Some things may even run slower but not so you can tell it is just that it wastes the cpu a bit fecthing 64 bits for a 32 instruction . It will fly with a 64 bit app I suppose . win XP has a limit of 4gigs of memory includeing virtual memory where as x64 can access memory in the tere bytes range . I have heard it is really great for stuff like video encodeing and anything that likes to suck up the memory . Your antivirus may not work or your firewall but you can use the windows firewall or tiny firewall is 64 bit and avast has a free 64 bit antivirus . Norton I hear maybe 64 bit in the latest version or the next . Logitech has 64 bit drivers , soundblaster , nvidia has 64 bit drivers . Cannon has 64 bit drivers for the pixma mp780 all in one , too bad I have a pixma mp760 . I forced windows to load the 780 drivers so my printer works and the card reader in it but not the scanner . It is not beta and I have seen a few places offering the OEM version for a good price . All in all the 64 bit stuff is trickeling in but software makers are still holding back and drivers maybe an issue .

OH ya it includes a 64 bit version of IE as well as a 32 bit version . Flash items on web sites will not play on the 64 bit version but do on the 32 bit version . If you plan to use a drive emulator like virtual drive forget it . I use to use that instead of my cd's for some games but won't work with win x64 so you will have to use the cd's again . I am useing opera as my browser managed to get to the web site on the 10th aniversary and get a free key beat the deadline by about 10 minutes :) Any way don't expect much from x64 it is stable runs well but the world has not gone to 64 bit computeing yet maybe they are waiting for vista . I did see a site that had vista drivers already . I have not tried wireless networking with my x64 system but my home lan works fine I am hardwired to the router and my laptop running XP home works fine wirelessly . BF2 use to play in sli mode but with the 64 bit drivers the menus did not work right the bottom half of the screen didn't work quite right but it was fine ingame . I just don't use sli for BF2 . I think it may have to do with BF2 useing some kind of flash menu or something .

flash is obstinately refusing to even publicly discuss 64 bit systems. Likely the commone sentiment is correect, they are waiting for enough complaints. Thats a shame, but its how 'most' companies work.

like bd said, drivers are the issue in 90% of the cases.

bf2 and all of mohaa is supposed to work good... COD:UO supposedly has an issue, but its easy to bypass from what ive read.

Honestly, I dont use a ton of peripherals like cameras etc, so i have not so many hardware driver issues... and better, not having them now, should i get some in the future the chances are greater that they will be supported with drivers.

as far as virtual drives... DT = Daemon Tools, and they are 'supposedly' releasing thier x64 compatible mounting software this month sometime, but as with anything undergoing a beta, who knows if it will be ready on time... I bleive thier website says... 'we dotn want to release a beta, we want it to work.' they also say making drivers for something as deeply integrated as this is 'not like making a driver for a printer' which makes you wonder how so many of these big companies dont have x64 drivers, while a free utility is working on much more complex drivers. v4 is also supposed to bypass new starforce drivers... starforce = evil bastards.

Running xp pro and x64 on the same machine, same raided drives, partioned, I gotta say, it just feels smoother. Ive only read bits and pieces about vista/longhorn, but one of those bits and pieces was extremely unflattering... mostly to do with M$ higher up's attitudes making the project much harder.

IF your tihnkin bout x64, take stock of your equipment, and any upgrades you are making soon, and check out driver availability or workarounds people may have posted. That probably more then anything else would be the major factor... if you have alot invested in peripherals and the companies 'have no plans currently to update drivers' that alone would probably keep you on 32 bit until you have much more compellign reasons to switch(which there certainly should be in the next couple years)

And of course, if you arent keeping a 32 bit partition or drive, id suggest getting any critical drivers(for me: essential MB drivers, RAID, Nvidia ethernet, etc) before you install.

I'm not very knowledgeable about networks, perhaps if I was, I could manage to get this x64 to connect to the x86 system downstairs, but aside from that, I beleive the only ways to currently wirelessly network through x64 is with a wireless bridge(or an access point? not really sure the difference), or alternatively people use video game wireless adapters i think... anyway, currently iut has to be soemthing without drivers on your system, because as far as I can find, absolutely no wireless companies have drivers for pci cards(though some reportedly have for labtobs)

lol... it jsut took me 4 hours to realize i had my unused sata ports enabled for raid, therefore windows could not pick them up... finaly got drive installed.

this networking thing is really irking me, i suck with networks...

the xp partition worked after i went to computer name and set the workgroup properly there, but that doesnt work on the x64. When I try and connect directly to the workgroup i get an error saying the path could not be found...

anyone maybe know what i should do past setting things up and/or usign the connections wizard?

might be a firewall issue too I know I had to make sure it was setup right to connect the two computers in a lan .

would haev to be the firewall, interacting differently with 64, since 32 works... both have different local addresses though...

I would try manual settings, but the whole conept eludes me mostly, I'm never sure for instance, when forwarding a port, whether you put in just the router adress .1 or the local address .xxx...
