pk3 not working

Post by Faceball »

When i place my pk3 in my main folder it isn't recognized by the game. I used pakscape and everything looks fine. I even went to open my pk3 using winrar and it looks identical to all the other pk3 i use.

I sent my pk3 to a friend and his game wont recognize it either.

this is my first attempt at this so i dont know what to do from here.

is there something i have not done?

i noticed that some pk3 files have "user-" in front of the map name. do i need this for it to work?

It's hard to say without seeing the directory structure in the .pk3 file, but something is obviously not right. :?

I'm not sure who started the "user-" prefix, but it is certainly not needed. The only thing for sure that does is that it gets read after the pak files.

Yeah, Im guessing folder structure ... and if its your first map maybe the wrong map files.

As far as naming it goes, like Innkeep said, you just want it to load after the pak files so name it with anything past 'p'. I personly name all my files z_filename.pk3

The user prefix insures your custom pk3 reads after the standard pk3s that come with the game, and is a good idea.

Try to remove your old map in your main\maps folder.
Live to map, not map to live.

The only reason that you need to have your .pk3 file read after the standard pak files is if you have a modified copy of an original file such as ubersound.scr, weather.scr, sunflare.shader, etc. This is VERY BAD PRATICE. If you do this, by all means add info about what you have done in the read.me file associated with your map!

Some times this is unavoidable to add required functionality to ubersound and uberdialog, but in other cases write a new shader or tiki if needed. Just please document it.

Not sure about all that....i just stick with the basics...as i still no nothing more.
Thx to jv-map i have discovered that when i made the pk3 i saved it as "mymap"/map/obj....instead of map/obj....so hopefully that is why it wasn't working.

Thx for ur help jv :D
