Detailing

Post by Faceball »

I know there have been some mixed emotions about this topic and i have become a lttile confused after reading some of the posts. I once posted and asked about using caulk texture and then using detail after placing a texture on the brush.

Now my new question is, is it good or bad to detail everything on the map? I have seen people say only ladders, steps and such.

My map has taken a small FPS hit in some places and was curious if it was caused by OVER detailing....

Sry to beat this topic to death, but in order for me to learn i gotta ask

This is one very important topic, so it cannot be asked enough.

Do not detail your entire map. Detail brushes are invisible for the vis compiler. This means, when you detail everything, the game will think the player can see everything and therefore draw the entire map.

Use structural brushes to block areas. Anything that doesn't help to block sight anyway, should be detail.

Remember blocking sight means you need to completely seal one room from the other with structural brushes. Just a small brush in mid air won't help at all.

Hope this gonna help a bit but it might also get you even more confused .

For example....you have two buildings sitting on grass with a flower planter in front of each building. metal stairwell leading up the side of one building.

If i am reading what you said correctly the you would only detail the flower planter and stair structures?

Would you ever detail any one side of the building brush?

No! Detailing doesn't help FPS but detailing reduces VIS data a lot! VIS data is the thing that helps your FPS but it has to be the right "VIS".
