weird sound error
just today i was playing MOHAA, just like any other normal MOH game, and my sound went WHACK.
the sounds that should be in the foreground (guns shooting, dialogue, Ventrilo, etc) is all really quiet. and the background stuff (background music, ambiance etc) is all REALLY loud. it just sorta happened like a couple hours ago, and it's doing it in every game i've tried (Oblivion, WoW, MOHAA, Cod2... etc).
i have an onboard sound system (cry) and it's never done this... no settings got changed, everything is plugged in correctly (i replugged twice).
what's going on? is my mobo going bad? 0_0

Did you recently update Windows XP? Most likely a sound codex got changed or updated by something you installed. Mohaa uses something called "Miles sound drivers", I think--a lot of games use them. If you do have windowsXP, It might be a good idea to do a system restore back to the last restore point.
Btw, you can test your sound drivers in the DirectX Diagnostic program (start/run type dxdiag and hit ok).

If I were you, I'd try updating the sound card drivers first.
The Miles Sound System drivers are supplied together with the game (the DLLs inside the snddrivers directory). I'm not sure what sound API it is using, but I guess it's DirectSound.

so strange, never had that happen. but the restore fixed it.
it wasnt just MOHAA tho, it was all the games i tried. even Halo for PC did it. and it was always the same, the background channel was loud and the foreground was really really soft.

you're welcome
Glad that fixed it. Can you tell us which update is at fault so we don't have the same problem?
While we are talking about sound errors, does anyone else have my problem with the progress bar in Windows Media Player. When I move it, the volume goes way up until I click on the WMP volume control slider and it goes back to normal. I think this problem started when I updated to Windows SPS2. I have searched the internet and found that other people have had the same problem, but have not found a fix for it.

~~WARNING~~~ This reply will in no way shape or form help anyone.
But I do love my new x-fi card... as advertised the sound difference is incredible(especialy from on board SB live)
The change in BF2 is like playing a compeltely new game, pretty freaking outstanding.
Speaking of which, anyone good at diagnosing microphone issues?

posted part of it in another thread...

I jsut got an x-fi card which I am very happy with. I would like to use my onboard for TS only. Now this IS possible, but its almost completely random, kinda dependent on the onboard, the card, the OS, and the MB(maybe other things) as to how much it will conflict I think. It sorta works, butttttttttttt....
My mic problem predates my new soundcard, and each sound chip suffers a similar fate. I believe its a driver issue, due to x64 or the MB or the combo of both, im not sure. I can get a mic to work sometimes, through either sound card, by uppign the mic volume to max... when i run the windows testing app I can barely hear the output, and its quite a chore to even get it to recognize the mic sometimes.
Other symptoms are apparent in TS... when I have any mic hooked into the output(or actualy i should say any 3.5mm connector as it does the same thing with a 3.5mm splitter from a single 2.5mm headset) I wont activate TS on voice unless i have it way way down on the whisper scale. However, once I lower that enough, the light for activation will stay on pretty much forever, even with no real mic plugged in... just from a pluf in the port. My uneducated guess is that this is some sort of feedback, and ive been told my output when i get any on TS is very very bad.
This all happens using solely the x-fi, or the LIVE, and it was happening when I only had the onboard LIVE as well. I kinda recall once when I had just Xp pro loaded, that the mic worked better, but that could just be wishfull thinking(although I do think I remmeber it working... i talked to someoen once and it was fine so that must have been on xp while i had a temporary dual boot - it was an un-activated copy.)
Since I have other issues(especially anything to do with networking), I will prolly get an eom xp pro from newegg...
Overall, I do very much like x64... it has a speed and smoothness that xp jsut cant touch in 32 bit... but some thing definately dont perform as well... for instance, while most games are fine, some experience technical issues.... (FEAR suffers in framerates and tends to crash after a few hours)
the problem is mostly that x64 adds a whole new element when peopel are makign drivers, and companies just dont want to put in the effort at the moment, so most 64 drivers come out with as little effort to port it as possible =/
Anyway, if anyone does have any suggestions for workign with the audio inside windows, feel free, but at this point im thinking my main conflict wont be with my dual cards, but still with trying to get x64 and my MB(+ other components) to all act as a team...
