Leaning Ladder with no func ladder entity

Post by Phantomwarrior »

We have used a leaning ladder that requires no ladder entity to climb. The ladder is an example by tltrude from one of his tutorial maps. It works great! Cuz you can walk up the ladder without holstering the weapon. The only problem is that the player entity climbs tooooooo fast. Is there an invisible texture brush or something that can be placed on the ladder to slow down the rate of speed going up and down?

You can't change a specific player's run speed, you can only change the sv_runspeed value, which will affect all players.

sv_runspeed 1000 & sv_gravity 100 in destroyed village makes for a fun 4-6 gameplay.

Just the ladder and for multiplayer!

Post by Phantomwarrior »

We don't need to change the player speed for the whole map, just the area going up and down the ladder for all players in a multiplayer level. I am very new to mapping, but I'm learning as we go. My experience in scripting is limited so far, so it would be nice if some guru could offer an example to make this work.

And this is exactly what cannot be done, m8. You can only change the global running speed.

OK, I just did it, it works. Make a brush out of nodraw, where you want the player to go slower. ( over his head, I tried,... may work if water level is lower, don't know, didn't try ).

Hit "s" to bring up surface properties, select water, hit apply, then ok.

Walk through it, player slows down.

Maybe one of these guru's can tell us how to make it NOT sound like water when you walk through it. I'm not going to spend more time on it. Have to goto work.

You can't, Neil. That's the point.

First you said you can't slow the player down, and I did, now you say you can't do what ?....................

exploding door

Post by tltrude »

I also made a Firemen's pole in the explodingdoor map--its over by the shooting gallery. It uses an invisible elevator (clip brush) to slow the player down when he gets near the bottom. But, it requires a lot of scripting to work. I wonder if a "mud" clip brush(es) would work?

This is the best no-script ladder I ever made. It was the first.

It is on the Nemesis site under prefabs, but he never gave me credit for it. There are other prefabs for steps/stairs, not by me, as well.

You can't make them slower without some kind of drawback, be it water movement sound or anything else.

We tried using a water brush and mud brush also. There must must be a way to make a brush texture or entity that restricts the speed of a player entity the same way as water without making sounds, bubbles, or waves. :D

Maybe. if you find the specific sound file for water, you can nuetralize it with a script and a trigger ? Or, maybe there's a way to create another sound that cancels the water sound out ?... therefore creating no sound at all. It is possible to "cancel" out sound, but don't know about mohaa.

what about trigger_push's? or something like that. modding out the water sound really isnt an acceptable option.
