Explosion = Lag (NOT TRUE)

Post by ButtChew »

Ok ... Im sure everyone is aware of map lag due to lots of explosions (Omaha).

I was messing with a map, and thought it'd be fun to have a sh*tload of bombs drop ... I mean lots!

I made the traditional bombs using the tank explosions. I wanted them to hit 1 - 2 seconds apart, so it was constant heavy bombing. Of course after about 3 bombs exploded my fps dropped like a cynder block.

I found out (and maybe this is very old news) that it is actually the smoke from the explosions that cause the lag. The tank explosion gives off smoke for about 20 seconds after blowing. The smoke is what causes the lag, not the explosion itself.

I went to a mortar explosion, which still looks pretty neat and gives off very little smoke. I made 25 bombs go off one after another, waiting only 1 second inbetween each one. My fps high was 97, lowest it dropped to was 80'ish.

Just something I ran across, might help someone.

As all sfx are client-side, this really isn't lag. It's just a framerate drop caused by the large number of transparent sprites in view.

Yes .. but its the smoke that causes this the most.
