Project Research Questions...

Post by Ophisâ„¢ »

Hey there,

Ok, I?m no mapper. In fact I first download the mohrad about 3 months ago. So I?m hardly at the skill level some of you lot are at. Basically, I know my basics and I can build a simple map easy (well, it isn?t hard is it?). I?ve always wanted to map, just never got round to doing anything about it.

NOW BEFORE you give up reading, I?m not about to ask for help like most of the mapping newbie?s do here and expect the helper to do all the work, then end up disappearing and not finishing the map in the first place. I am in fact looking for advice.

So, I have started to develop an idea to do this little personal project of mine. Its just one of those things that you can get in your head from time to time and the idea won?t go unless you at least attempt it. Well, let?s cut the small talk and get to the chase?

I?m planning on making a map of The Trafford Centre here in Manchester (Home City). Now, the place is huge and it will most likely take me awhile if I go ahead with it. So I need some questions and opinions from the pro mappers out there.

Please answer the following in your reply;

1. Have you been to The Trafford Centre before? (http://www.traffordcenter.co.uk)
2. Going by the guide (PDF file Seen Here), do you think it?s a good complex for an indoor map?
3. If I used roughly 75% custom textures for the map, would that make the file size way too big? (Or would it still be reasonable like the City Nights series)
4. Would you be interested in playing on it/being apart of it?
5. If I made this map for mohaa, how would I go about making it work on the 2 expansion packs for mohaa so everyone benefits?

Q5 probably only needs answering once.

THANK YOU in advance. (Opinions welcomed)

kid i use about 95 % custom textures in my maps ...for an average sized map (size of backstreets from city nights) you're looking at anywhere from 8MB - 15MBs for textures alone. with cable & DSL the days of keeping a mod down below 5MBs is long gone.

yea i have another mall tye map called "Shopp" a freind sent me, so i will be using that to help me along. Im not sure if i want it to still be a mall.. the real things a huge mall but i may just use the building shape and layout and then convert into a rocket facility or somthing. Again, not sure yet. Thanks for the above link btw!

(Still no takers on answering the questions tho?!?!?!?!)

looked at the pdf and to answer your question on map set up...yes and no.

no because it's the same layout essentially as ''crossroads'' and a lot of players can't stand the simple ''get from side A to side B via straight line'' style.

yes because of they love the above.

this is what makes mall maps hard.

sure i'll take a look at it. just remember i'm just one opinion. if you feel strongly about your layout go with it.

trafford center

1. No
2. No, it is to large and only has one main path for players to follow.
3. Depends on how many custom textures there are.
4. No
5. You would need to use, or make, models that work in all the games. Also, different scripts for Mohaa and SH/BT.

You should design your own mall -- using trafford center as a guide. Have a look at "shopp.zip" at this site.

http://www.planetmedalofhonor.com/recyc ... /maps.html

included: map-file, many custom textures.

i have shopp.pk3 already as i have said above somewhere. tbh its ok but its all americian shops etc. The Trafford Centre is, well, 5min walking distance from my house so taking pics for my own textures is not a problem.

the guide that has the TC's map does not show the full walking paths of the trafford centre. It has a carpark right round it that i will be doing to... for the map of that click here. the car park btw is 2 storys, offering space for the players to hide around. I'm aiming to have the outside quite open so snipers benifit from getting on the TC's rooftops. Where as inside will be like the Shopp map. For a 360 degree veiw of inside the TC go here.. it will give you a diffo impresion on what its like!

but thanks for the feedback even if it was all negative. lol

Trafford centre isnt going to make a good map. How about the tough backstreets of Moston or somewhere, roughed up bombed streets, sheds in back gardens, just like Arnhem.

Edit: You realise the people of Arnhem used the bodies of their dead friends and family as barricades during market garden.
Philip II of Macedon sent a message to Sparta:
"If I win this war, you will be slaves forever."
The Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If".
