Bad Goings-on! Pacific Assault
I've got some weird speed problems in Pacific Assault. They have nothing to do with the game's graphics. I can play the game just fine at full speed on multiplayer.
However, on singleplayer, whenever a battle starts, the game will suddenly go very slow in a slow-motion fashion (nothing skips! the game only skips if I look at an area with too many polygons).
It doesn't matter what level I'm on, the battle will always go slow. This is especially true in situations where I'm fighting alongside allies that have floating avatars above their heads. In situations where I just have to ride around and shoot things and there are no allies on the ground, the speed is usually decent.
Once the battle ends (battles usually initiate and end by the appearance and disappearance of a Squad Commands thing appearing in the top-right), the game will begin to run at normal speed again. This slow-motion never occurs on multiplayer, so I have reason to believe this slowness is due entirely to AI trying to think.
This slowness would actually occur if I tried to set my graphics too high, as well. However, I'm playing the game with everything as low as possible and, as I've said, the game only goes slow during battles when AI think. Not when my computer has to render anything visual.
When my game starts up, it takes two minutes to get past each startup movie, and THEN the game loads. So, the startup often takes fifteen minutes, counting the loading time for the menu, before I even get to see the menu.
So, the questions are...
What's with this slow-motion? The single-player is unbearable when the game goes ridiculously slow. You know how unbelievably frustrating a bolt-action rifle is when it takes five times as long to fire each bullet, and even longer than that to reload?
Is there a way I can make the startup menu not render in 3D, but rather be maybe... A big blank wall or something like that? If I can't do anything about that, is there at least some way to get rid of the intro movies?
Here are my computer specs, if someone needs to know them in order to help me:
OS Name - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version - 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Processor - x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2392 Mhz
Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce 5500
Total Physical Memory - 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory - 300.32 MB
Total Virtual Memory - 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory - 1.96 GB
Page File Space - 1.21 GB

Hog
Those are not bad specs, the game is just a video hog. To play at full speed, you'll have to turn all the graphic features way down. Also go with a lower screen resolution like 600x800. IT may look like crap, but at least you can play.
I have everything ALL THE WAY DOWN. The loading times wouldn't be so bad if they just opened up into a fast, playable game singleplayer game. Like I said, the multiplayer runs great. I NEVER slow down on multiplayer. Just the power-hungry AI of Pacific Assault slow down everything. I'll be fighting five enemies, and the game will suddenly be so slow it's a wander there are other people out there that can even manage to play the singleplayer. I mean, the people who made it surely had to play it, right? Apparently not.
"Hey, Jim."
"What?"
"You think maybe we should get some people to test this on computers that don't cost $2000? You know, some people might not have ultra-powerful computers as expensive as ours."
"What did I tell you about thinking of the customer, Tim?"
"To never do it and, rather, release a product only a few people can manage to play, even on new computers?"
"That's right."
I don't mind having to play new games with all of my settings all the way down. If it plays, it plays. But the PA singleplayer doesn't play. No wander it never sold too well. Not even 100 people play it online at once (probably because that 32-player limit).
Look at Allied Assault. That game is still successful to this day! Well, EA doesn't make anymore sales on it, but... You know what I mean.

That virtual memory is extremely low. Go in and see what the recomended is and change it. Also, one more stick of 512 wouldn't hurt. Check and see what your graphics card settings are on. Too high, and it won't be worth a hoot because the card is "lame for the game" to start with......no pun intended.
To increase virtual memory.... start/control panel/system/advanced/performance/settings/advanced/virtual memory/change/
I also tried playing that game with a p4-2400........sucked dude......that tellin ya sumpthin ? Wanna play, ya gotta pay...........

the entire point of a video game is to simulate an aspect of real life to the most realistic degree. graphics are half the ballpark, which is why the companies want to make sure their game looks good and right in the highest possible settings, lower settings, by definition, wont look as real and aren't worth testing for reality.

I can't understand what you guys are talking about at all, but like I've already said, I couldn't give less than a crap about graphics. I can't see why you fellows seem to think that I need to buy more stuff for my computer. They're video games. It's all in the fun, not in the eye candy.
In fact, try to play a game with "XTREME GOOD GRAPHIX" with all of the settings all the way up, then all the settings all the way down. You'll begin to actually understand the gameplay of the game, rather than just how pretty it looks.
As for buying a new video card, I don't need one. I've already said I can run the game on multiplayer. It's not about intense special effects or polygon detail or any of that, the only problem is the amount of memory the AI take. I don't get this slow-down in games that are even more graphics-intensive, like F.E.A.R, because F.E.A.R. obviously handles the AI better.
Pacific Assault just has crappy compatability. Plenty of people have said it before. Even those stuck-up video game reviewer guys that have really powerful systems. I've never liked those guys.
I'm sure I could always use another memory upgrade, but I don't own any games aside from Pacific Assault that I'm having problems with, and I won't be buying a memory upgrade for just one game.
I'll try to increase virtual memory. I'll get back to you on whether it works or not.

When the P_A demo first came out it wouldn't play for crap on my p4 machine. All choppy and unplayable, even at the lowest settings. You are in denial thinking your hardware is sufficient to play this game.
A week later I had my first 939 machine thrown together with a new 6800 video card. What a heck of an improvement. Can still play everything on it, but as the games became more demanding, I built a top end sli machine to keep up, but enough of that. ( sli really isn't worth it by the way... one top end card ( or near top end card ), is sufficient....................
If you are dumb enough to think that eyecandy isn't everything, maybe it's not, but boy it sure makes the game alot better and more enjoyable to play. You are in denial.
Single player, IMO, puts a greater demand on the card than multiplayer............ just a feeling I get by playing the game.
Save your allowance, cut grass over the summer, get a part time job, ....... Christmas time you can move up the ladder a little, and enjoy playing those games a little better. Make friends with your mom and dad, tell them your computer sucks and need a new one.
DON"T BUY A DELL OR any of those high volume retail machines though. Find somebody in your neighborhood to put one together........ after you tell them what your needs are. Or let them see what you have now, and what you would like to do with it, and if it's even worth upgrading.
Time comes when you are in position to get a good upgrade, don't sell yourself short.

What's your problem, neillomax? It's not your computer. I'm not going to upgrade it, especially because somebody like you tells me to over the internet.
Though I'm sure you'll be absolutely amazed, I checked the requirements and my PC meets all of them.
My computer handles the game just fine when AI don't need to think. Who are you to say that my computer can't handle the game? I have no problems with the visuals or the audio. It runs at top speed, even with the sound on high quality.
IT'S ONLY THE AI OF PACIFIC ASSAULT. When the AI think, everything is slow-motion. When the AI stand still and do generally nothing at all, everything moves fine. There is NEVER any slow-down on multiplayer because no AI have to think.
On other games with graphics like Pacific Assault, the single player runs fine. I already mentioned F.E.A.R. up there, which runs fine on my PC on single player.
Don't tell me what my computer can and can't play. You have no idea what you're talking about. There's no denial. You're the one in denial, trying to make yourself feel better about all of the money you wasted on powerful hardware by trying to annoy people like me who don't want to waste money on upgrades. It's not your problem, and it will never be my problem, because I don't have one. I like my hardware just fine.
Hardware isn't everything, and I'm not going to play a video game just because the graphics are nice.
It's okay if people decide that they want to spend money on video cards, but there's no need to go around telling people what they need to own. I like my PC just fine. By such a theory, if people need to own such great technology, we should work to give the homeless PCs, rather than homes or food. Because, you know. Powerful PCs are so much more important than life's necessities.

I think YOU are "thinking" too much
I checked the requirements and my PC meets all of them
YUP, EA fooled alot of people didn't they ?
I already mentioned F.E.A.R. up there, which runs fine on my PC on single player.
If you are playing FEAR on that card....good for you. You'll never know what your missing, performance wise, and video wise...... It's just a game and now you can brag to your friends that you played it....... gooody
It's not your computer. I'm not going to upgrade it
Then stop complaining
As far as super mario brothers.... I never played it because I thought it was for retards.............. hmmmmm......?
Powerful PCs are so much more important than life's necessities.
YOU BETTER believe they are. ......
by the way, I think homeless people would rather have a clean pair of underware
Did I get your goat yet ?........ no.......? maybe....?
Did you try to remove adware and spyware.
Did you defrag your system.
Did you do a disc cleanup.
Do you turn off all of your apps....... insatnt messaging,,,antispyware....
Do you keep your drivers updated.
Do you goto microsofts website and get updates.
Is your motherboard bios updated.
Do you keep the machine cleaned of dust.
You don't have to buy alot of stuff to help with that game, but your graphics card is slow, and probably only has 128 memory. A new AGP card, ( I assume thats what you have ), isn't that much..... 256/256 memory, will help that system a little.

Spare me your crappy comebacks, petty insults and worthless arguements. Real people have worse things to worry about than PC power. This topic was over quite a while ago, because I've decided that Pacific Assault can wait, as I'm still addicted to working on Allied Assault.
And, if you're going to quote me, you should at least use quotation marks if you're not going to use the quote feature.

personally, i play any game for it's quality, which includes graphics. most people tend to turn smoke and effects down in order to get an edge on those with bigger effects or who are blinded by post-bloom HDR.
i'd rather get the experience of a good-looking, good-feeling, good-sounding game than have companies try and cater to those with half-decade-old computers. (yes it's almost been 5 years since MOHAA was released)
trying to deny yourself a better, more powerful and faster computer only means you wont be able to play anything new (or anything newish at highest settings and truly experience the game) you'll never know what F.E.A.R. plays like at maxed settings, or CoD2, or when it comes out, Crysis. you can validate it however you want but all you're doing is essentially telling yourself and everyone around you change is bad.
it is, of course, your problem. but being irrational won't help it.
My machine is fully capable of running CoD2, Doom3, Hl2, and BF2 at the highest settings they can, and i could have another one made for less than i spend for gas in the summer, and i'm on minimum wage part time. money is no object.
in reality then, the only excuse for NOT updating your machine is that you really dont WANT to play games. which is perfectly understandable, not everyone cares quite as much about deriving an experience of destruction and mayhem (or development and creation) as i do.
and you don't need to flame and get irritated to make a point, it only serves to make the person not want to listen to you.
not to mention., you've already figured out the problem yourself and stated it, cornering yourself. your problem lies in your computer and it's inadequecy to run PA. more specifically, your CPU is not fast (or maybe it's cache isnt large enough) to handle PA's demands, which are admittably quite large for what it delivers.

I know neillomax is stupid, but I know you aren't, lizardkid.
If you like graphics so much more than the game actually being fun, then why would you be in a forum that's all about Allied Assault? Shouldn't you be off in a forum about the newest, crappiest game that expects people to buy it for the good graphics and not the crappy gameplay it has?
Not only that, but you didn't seem to read my above posts. I run Pacific Assault just fine, until AI want to think. That's it. The end. It doesn't go any further. There's no deep, intricate background or complicated, elaborate reason. The AI think, it goes slow.
There are always a million nerds all over every forum, chat room or whatever that always think that everyone absolutely must have top technology just like them, even if whoever they're whining to have NO INTENTION OF BUYING ANY UPGRADES. Since when did they start caring about other people?
Oh, they don't care. They just freak out if they discover that people don't want to piss away their money on crap like they did.
I was once talking about a video game on my Gameboy Advance, and some nerd had the gall to tell me that GBAs are for losers and they suck and I should buy a PSP, just like him.
"Why would I want to buy a PSP if there has yet to be a single video game on the PSP I would even be slightly interested in playing?"
He literally said to me, "Because it will make you cool."
"Oh, like you? Nerd."
Not that there's anything wrong with people owning a PSP. But I don't want to own it. This is generally in the same fashion that I think people can own all of the nice technology that they want, but I'm not going pay for needless video upgrades. The only reason I got a new video card in the first place was because my old one only supported Direct X7, so I couldn't play any new games.
I bought the cheapest card that supported Direct X9 and, tada, every game works. Except PA, obviously, because the AI is terrible.
Don't try to come back and tell me, once again, that my computer somehow can't handle Pacific Assault, even though I've already explained to you exactly what makes the game go slow.
And don't try to pull the same crap with video cards and memory upgrades and all of that crap. I don't care.
I know you (lizardkid) or neillomax or whoever will try to make up some crappy response telling me how I'm totally a gay n00b for not wanting to own the crap they own, but I don't care. People like that are stupid, ignorant and have no concern for what happens in the real world, but rather what happens in their fake video games, which are just massive assemblies of 0s and 1s.
