Going DOWN a ladder?

Post by Bjarne BZR »

Im having a problem with going DOWN my ladders... you know how in the comercial levels, when you go over an edge where there is a ladder, you get flipped around and attached to it. This does not work in my maps.

All other aspects of my ladders work just fine, except this. All tuts I found so far just deals with making it climbable... Any pointers?

Thanx

Maybe do a search. There have been lots of ladder threads, you might find something useful.

Hey are you having a problem with backing into it? The tut on the site says to make the Func_ladder a bit higher then the actuall ladder itself
Right, select the 2D view XY TOP (Ctrl + Tab), over your ladder create a brush with a slight overlap (See image below - left), but flush to back of the ladder.

:( . You may try that If you can climb up the ladder you can probably climb down.

Remeber dont make your Func_ladder too big other wise you will have a hard time walking through. Just make it slightly taller then the actuall structure itself

This is what it will look like. (above pic)

Also, in the original maps, all ladders seem to have another horizontal ladder brush at the top. Dunno why :?.

Hi again!

jv_map: No, I haven't fond anything that way...

Yarik: Backing into the ladders makes you fall down ( as it does in the comercial levels, and this is fine ). The ladder is built as you point out ( a little higher )

It WILL work sometimes if I move slowly and stare straight down at the ladder ( Like in: "Hi! I'm stupid! I stare closely at ladders when people try their best to kill me!" ). But I whant the ladder to "suck you in" like the original maps...

Hmmm, jv_map... what de-compiler R U using? None of the ones I tried recovered the ladder textured brushes... a good de-compiler would be the best tutorial for this ( and most of my other ) problem ( s )...

BZR you can also try walking straight into it. Walk forward that might help. Or walk backwards until you start falling the press the forward key.

Just crank the ladder brush up higher, like 10 units above the ladder itself. See if that helps

Nah ButtChew. It did not help... I tried that and also more extreme mesures, like: adding a players height to the top of the ladder brush (this made the player climbe into the air before getting off the ladder ), increasing the "depth" of the ladder brush ( this only made the player cimb a meter in front of the ladder and at the top jumping off without reaching the ledge an falling back down ). None of these extreme mesures affected the "climb down behaviour" in any way :'-(

hmmm, that is damn weird. Does it work in other places on the map, like do you have other ladders?

Just build a random platform in the map somewhere else to see if its maybe a location specific problem.

I've got seven or eight ladders in the map ( It's a HUGE seven floor factory ) and all of them have the same behaviour.

The ladders in the EA maps attaches the player if he looks down about 30-40 gedrees ( straight ahead beenig 0 degrees ) at most when going into the ladder top. MY ladders attaches the player if he looks down about 80-90 gedrees.

Most of my ladders have been individually constructed, so it's not a "Captain Paste" error... :?

Eureka!

Post by Bjarne BZR »

:D  Thanx to jv_map's pointers I've now solved the problem! :D

You add a second common/ladder textured brush to the top of the first one!

I made a tutorial on how to do it, check it out ( Click on Tutorials -> Going DOWN a ladder ).

Thanx all!

Again: :)
