Down with DRM!

Post by Rookie One.pl »

Today the DefectiveByDesign.org's (an initiative to bring down Digital Rights Management; Digital Restrictions Management would be a more accurate name) Freedom Rings action took off. The idea is that they published the phone numbers of RIAA officials and asked people to give them a call and tell them what they think of DRM.

If you support freedom, join the action.

I personally have called one the German guys.

Fascism

Post by tltrude »

Sounds a little fascist to me. Next you'll be telling us (in the name of freedom) to put on brown shirts and go smash their windows! Disrupting communications is an aggressive act, not a protest.

See the call reports. It's all polite conversations in an attempt to change those people's minds.

Who cares what another person thinks? If it effects me and its a bad thing, then maybe i'll consider doing something, but tbh, this kind of act against me would make me just want to do it more, to get back at the ones who bothered me by ringing.

(oh and also, as polite as it may be, it still harrasment. Therefore it isnt doing any good at all.)

Was that directed at me, or at tltrude for calling it you?

I however have just finished reading up, I think its a tiny bit OTT but meh, what ever floats your boats. Now im not sure exactly how it works, but the basics is that their saying that some products are restricted (delebratly) from doing some things, because them things that you may want to do, would not profit the company... correct? So isnt this the same as saying car companies should be sued for putting a limit on a car so it cant go as fast as when it was first built?

Well, what ever, i cant be arsed understanding because it doesnt effect me directly. yet. . .

Hey Rookie, I respect your work here, and I respect your idea's of open source, but this battle is different. It is a private organization, creating private property, and they have a choice to use it and sell it as you wish. If you feel that the DRM is evil, you got a secret weapon. Choice.

What's that? What is choice? It means don't buy it. You feel that iTunes or any other media file type program constrains your ability to listen to music? Don't buy it. Music, movies and any other media is not a necessity like water and food. The companies have every right to decide what they do and what constraints and restrictions they add to their own product.

You might hate the fact that you can't play your music you buy from iTunes on anything BUT an iPod. But here is the kicker. Why'd you get it while knowing what happened?

The free market doesn't work that way. The private property of one person/company is not to be at the discretion of the whole community.

I agree with you Yarik and maybe you have just stumbled upon a great idea for an itunes rival, an open source player!
