Unwanted VIS splits from clip brushes

Post by Bjarne BZR »

May everyone knew this, but I'll remind you if you do...
Im creating my map in good peace, and suddenly compile time skyrocketed ( from ~24h to ~72h using best quality ). And ( almost ) all I did was to put some metal clip inside my 5 rather ghostly flak88's.

Then and there I realized that the cute little "invisible" common/metalclip brushes were structural to the compiler. So I made them detailed and all was back to my peaceful mapping again!

/Bjarne

PS: Is 24h a long compile time for a seven floor factory 5600 by 2500 units? ( I use an AMD 1800+ with 512 MB )

What is it you don't believe? My compile time or the vis splits?

I can prove both!

Well yeah rox ( OK 72h was an error on my part but 24 is normal )!

OK; the map is big and complex ( check out the Beta 1) but 24h seems a bit toooooo loooooong to me... :?

common/metalclip has surfaceparm trans so it can never be structural and it isn't.

And when I got back to the coziness of my MOHRadiant see this that I forgot while caulking the Flak88's:

Tell me I'm wrong, but if you do, tell me what I did to design this split... cuz I find no other explanation...

I think it's a blocksize split. You might want to try compiling with -blocksize 0 (bsp) and see if it still happens.

Sorry man, Its not a blocksize split. I compiled with -blocksize 0.

Still

(Dude, you KNOW a blocksize split does not look like that  )

What happens exactly if you turn the metal clip into detail?

Then the split issssss.... *drumroll* GONE!

I've only got the pictures left, as the problem was fixed long ago... so I COULD have done something else with the brush, but I cant look it up anymore...

OK! OK! I was WRONG!

I made a test map to settle this scary problem, and I could not generate a split with a common/metalclip brush.

But I still wonder how I caused that split... because it was made with that brush.... but I cant prove it anymore, cause the brush is long gone... kind of makes me a bit scared and left in a limbo-like place... But anyway Im glad that a n00b mapper like me could not prove a hard veteran like jv_map wrong... :D

Sorry for stealing all your valuable time away with non-existent rubbish problems...

Don't worry, I love a little discussion :).

And don't say you're a 'n00b', 'cause I know you aren't.

Also, you didn't steal time but dropped an (seemingly) important notice. It's always good to test things out yourself rather than just assuming somebody else says it right. I appreciate it.

Truth is i AM a mapping n00b, but I'm a rather good programmer, so i'm used to thinking in the "machine way", and that REALLY helps...

But a little praise never killed anyone ( I hope! ), so thanx, right back atcha!

Looks like an SP map if I'm not wrong.
