who's the godfather of all metal music ?

watch this clip from way back ( i remember the original) pay attention to seven seconds in for when the true godfather loses his mind and sits all other singers (james hetfield who ?) down by bellowing out a mere 13 seconds of pure voltage vocals.

They also call Ozzie the godfather of Metal - I never understood this for either him or Halford, as the true father of metal is neither or even a vocalist.

I remember the first time I heard VanHalen. I knew right away it was something totally new and different - though I didn't know what to call it. The first time i heard the term "metal" I new exactley what it meant.

There are those that will say that metal was created by the classic hard and acid rockers like Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple etc. But they didn't flip the switch that turned on Heavy metal. To believe so is like saying the hamburgers were invented by the first peoples that ate raw meat between a sandwich of bare thumb and fingers.

i still dont see Halen or Ozzy as metal, i see the punk bands today as wannabe musicians, i see bands Like Demon Hunter and Disturbed as real metal. buzzing guitar with a singer who CAN sing, but sometimes does those screams and grunts that you need for metal.

i dont mind van halen or any of those other classic rock bands (i actually like ACDC, but then, who doesnt?) but i'd prefer to have a darker rock, or electronica. just my taste.

plus anyone with hair that long needs to have a run-in with a weedwhacker.

when the term ''godfather'' is used it's not ment as the ''father'' or creator of a genre (ie. james brown godfather of funk/soul/r&b, neil young godfather of grunge...) but as someone that is thought by a majority to best represent the genre .

btw, the following bands are ''hard rock'' ( a great category in it's own right), NOT metal...

ac/dc is also blues based hard rock, my friend .

please don't doubt me. we have used heavy metal as hymns in the church of me for decades .

saying mr. Ed is heavy metal has got to be some sort of heresy....

I mean completely forget for a second, how hideous VH became in the 90's... I know I know... its reallllllly hard....

but all that aside... the only bit that even conjures the image would be the riffs... the rhythyms and composition arent even close.... Vai is better in the same vein and still isnt even close... more like the progressive sub genre but only in that aspect.

old VH was a cacaphony of sorts, with the outrageous Roth, and the admittedly innovative aforementioned Eddie.... and a completely bland rhythym section.

Aside from all that, VH was definately the primary inspiration for all the fake metal, glam hair bands(for that alone they owe a deep debt to society)... which is I admit... a thin line... for instance... Poison is clearly on one side... while say... skid row, barely clears the divide.

You gotta give alot of the props for metal to Iomi and Ozzy... Metal eolved from blues rock... all blues chords, lots of fills and solo's and a certain pace.... Take Cream.... (the most taltend band ever musician for musician =p) hard blues rock, dynamic vocals, put together with inventive rhythyms. Clearly Cream wasnt metal, but it was one of the obvious precursors, moreso then Zeppelin. Then Sabbath comes along, with simpler(but 'harder') versions of the same chordage and riffdom and a median of the classic blues rhythyms and the more complex aforementioned ones. Layer on top, the prototype metal vocalist, and a morbid inclination, and there you have what is really the first metal band. Songs like 'Faeries Wear Boots' 'Sweet Leaf' 'The Wizard' and 'Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath' are literally blueprints that inspired the sound.

Mr. Ed did do alot to popularize the trademark guitar squeal and pace... but his band did little else, and I can't call them more then a footnote on the progression of Heavy Metal.

saying van halen contributed to glam rock is slapping the kabuki makeup off of gene simmon's face. eruption, yes that may have led to the fast finger fret tapping guitar solo late 80s glam metal bands became noted for.

Yes Splaetos, All those things you mention regarding others responsible for cultivating HM I can't argue with - and don't forget Ritchie Blackmoore as well - Who I believe contributes some of the first and best hard core classically influenced HM.

Yes alot of crap came from the VH leap of guitar evolution - but thats not VHs fault - also alot of good stuff came from it too.

All im saying is we didn't know what to call Heavy Metal untill we heard that sound recorded on VanHalen 1.
