New To Mapping, Can Anyone Help?

Post by HandyTech »

Hello Everyone,
I am a new mapper, and I'd like to understand how all of this works. Ok, so I downloaded the "MOHAA:Radient" program. I don't even know what the heck that means. Can someone describe to me what that means? Also, here's a few questions I need help with... which may become helpful to new beginners like me.

What does "prefab" stand for?

What are the first things I have to do when I start the application?

What are some basic steps to creating a simple map?

Is there a map I can download to fool around with and get to know the program? Where do I download it to, my map folder?

Just a few thoughts that have been bugging me. It's been a while now since I first tried a crack at this mapping thing, and I still haven't gotten anywhere yet. It's a little confusing quite frankly this GUI for MOHAA Level Editor.

Anyone here to help me?
Respectfully,
Nicolae Crisan

Making maps is a big subject, putting every aspect and piece of art the game has together so it looks good can be pretty challenging, but if you check out the First Room tutorials and build up from there, it's pretty easy, all of the tuts here are detailed and they'll walk you through anything you need to know, and if they don't there's these forums ;)

If you missed it, or even forgot what altogether, the First Room tutorial is in the Docs section of the Radiant directory, the place you installed radiant :)

And, to prevent brain cell loss due to PKM, put your entdefs.pk3 file in MOHAA>main!

prefab stands for many things, but it's just something prebuilt (fabricated) and avaliable to be loaded into your map. For example, you make an incredible house you want to you over and over again in all your maps. Make it a prefab, then load it into your maps and your house is there again! Yay Prefabs! (Ask tltrude for prefabs sometime)

endefs.pk3 > mohaa/main

EVERY map needs an info/player/start or another variation of it. Otherwise you get a raunchy error message in your console.

Everything seems to work better, in the DM folder. IE: Ubersound.

Find out what a skybox is, but know it's not necessary until the final compiling.

Figure out how to compile. Otherwise you'll have a whole lotta .maps but no .bsps.
