units vs. meters?

Post by Big Bad Wolf »

i've been up all night trying out breakable boxes, rotating doors, making houses (which until now are nothing but ugly bricklike construction), etc.

but whatever i do, the scale always seems to be wrong, either the map is made for dwarfs or for giants, but never as it should :(

so, my question is how many units equal 1 meter?

Depending where you come from you will either use imperial measurement ( feet and inches)
Or metric measurement.
Ok, 16 units equall to 12inches or 1 foot therefore 16 units = 30cm
A players height is 96 units.
A door is generaly 128x64 units in stock maps, although I tend to make them a bit smaller because to me this is still oversized.
A player can jump a maximum of 64 units
A step/stairs should be no more than 16 units high.
Hope this helps.

Ok, I had the same problem and I contacted Snake on msn. This is what he sent me, which is very very helpful.

Player Height (6 Foot) = 96 units
Min Height = 64 units
Min Width = 32 units
Max Step Height = 16 units
Max Jump Height = 64 units

Walking ducked through a hole: min. 58 E height
Steps (Without jumping): max. 15 E
Jumping on a brush: from 15 E up to max. 64 E
Door width: ca. 70 E
Door height: ca. 130 E
Room height normal: ca. 160 E
Room height for a hall: ca. 250 E
looking in a ducked position over a brush: 40 E
sitting ducked behind a brush to take cover: min 60 E
height for a brush to place a mg 42 on it: 75 E

should help you out very well

since i can't stand measuring, i just do create an ai_actor and use it as a reference. since that is the height from tip of head to bottom of toe of a player/bot it works for me.

the only think i have my questions about are those stairs - haven't seen many stairs with steps of 30cm, i think i'll lower them a bit

the map i've got in mind is a model of an existing area, and want to make it as realistic as possible, that's why i really want the measures to be as close to reality as possible...

I generally use 50 units = 1 m which is pretty close to what Imagination said.

Actual bounding box size of a player (this is different from the size of an actor/spawnpoint in radiant):

30 units width in both axes.
94 units tall when standing.
54 units tall when crouched.

I think this also defines the minimum sizes of a door/hatch a player can move through, but definately make them a bit larger or it will be very hard for the player to fit right in.

I think the max jump height is 56 units but I'm not overly sure as I'm a poor jumper :P

Like Imagination said doors of 128 units height are too high (~2.5m), i.e. huge even for today's standards - let alone a 1940's door. Somewhere between 100-110 units is much better :).

The default scale for models is 16units / 30.5cm = 0.52, if that helps.

Thought we had covered a few already wolf,
Doors for me are 112x56 (stock they are 128x64...too big)
Room height for me is around 160/172.
Windows as squares i'd have 64x64 but they can be anything that suits the building.
Ladders...well um as high as you need it to be m8.

Ohh and while I remember..try to keep your dimensions to denominations of 8 or 16 or for that matter any denomination of the number 2 ie: 2/4/8/16/32 - This keeps the map clean and much simpler to fit texures.
If you don't understand i'll elaborate but avoid units with odd number sizes for ex: 15x135

here's whta my usual wall looks like in mohaa, I like higher walls though, so that when I throw my ceiling in the inside of the room isn't so high up.
