I'm still a flagbearer for the camp that thinks anyoen classified as a 'child' shouldnt be on the internet at all, so I cant feel any sympathy. NO offense to you youngins.... but the 'typical' 11-16 year old, basicaly the whoel world round, believes they know everything, and really dont know much at all =)

If he cant figure out how to keep his identity and account secure(whatever the hell account they are talking about) he shouldnt have it in the first place.

Ah well, we can only hope this will convince him that he isnt in fact, the cleverest of them all, and shine a light on the fact that he doesnt know as much as he thinks.... but then again, at 13, I have little faith it will even serve to reinforce that life lesson =p

well i think there needs to be some sort of "net ed" (like drivers ed) that kids should take before hopping on the WWW, i didn't but i've been on computers since i was about 8, and my parents owned a web design company so i knew what not to do.

it's just common sense, and kids are pretty gullible. "dont talk to strangers" "look both ways" etc, if you pound it into them and keep reminding them about it they wont have problems. "dont give passwords to anyone" "dont tell anyone where you live" "dont give anyone your picture" and stuff like that. If you make it clear enough that bad things happen if they do that, then they wont.

But IM's ESPECIALLY, shouldn't be allowed to kids before ~16 years. (depending on the kid). That's just asking for stalkers, molesters, scammers and all that junk.

anyway, i think getting kids to the net is good, but it's like anything else, it's dangerous and they need to know the pitfalls.

no i dont, but i sure don't see it being the internet's fault; banning someone from something never kept them from it.

it's pretty simple. Just teach them NOT to do it before they start wondering what would happen if they did, and you're clear. Not for everyone, of course, but for the majority they'll get the idea.

well, you may be right or you may be wrong.

It can be simpler. People having children ~now~ tend to be more computer and internet literate. So there should be the possibility of more parental concern, teaching and control. However, id have to say the tendencies in child raising has been slipping from a desired level for years, so how much will that downward trend subtract from guidance for children on the internet?

Anyway, with the prevalence of myspace and its ilk, this should be a serious concern for parents. If your child is under 14, there is no excuse to be clueless about what they do online... after that, you probably know more how they react, and how they interact with people, so I dont think you necessarily need to be paranoid with 'young adults' but having some idea what they are doing, even if you trust them to make good decisions, still is a good idea.

I think alot of parent give up cause thier kids know more about computers then them. Hopefully from that perspective at lerast, the playing field is levelling. Kids may still know some things thier parents dont, but some parents certainly will know more, while most parents should, in the future, know at least enough to understand, and control what thier children do. After all... the internet doesnt come in through the windows... controlling access to it in the home is never too complex.
