I disagree... look at Apple. Windows have already made all the money in the world anyway now apple wants apiece of the pie.. (apple pie?) so they are making them selfs look as cool as they can to get people to become fan boys. MS don't have to do that.
End of the day, MS don't become as huge as they are now by selling shitty products. Period.

No they became as big as they did through collusion and the creation of the first digital trusts.
Aside from that, the building blocks of M$'s success are twofold: Windows, and Integration. Depending on how much you believe the mythology of "Pirates of the Silicon Valley' the original impetus for the M$ brand may have been shrouded in deceit from the start. The rest is just Corporation doing what a corporation will do in a cut-throat unregulated industry.
Whatever you think though, you cant make a case for apple as being some upstart company trying to grab a niche of M$'s hard earned empire. Apple has been around since the beginning of the PC, and whatever the truth between Gates and Jobs was, apple certainly had a great deal to do with what the PC has become. In fact they still do have alot to do with what M$ does to thier PC environments. Each of these ad pushes invariably have some effect on Microsoft.
hmmmm... this is nothing new... Apple has been marketing themselves in such a way for almost two decades. It does go in 'spurts' tho. Historically they havent had much other choice... its not like Nvidia v. ATI.... where you can pick one or the other and the ramifications are slight.apple wants apiece of the pie.. (apple pie?) so they are making them selfs look as cool as they can to get people to become fan boys.

find me ONE PROGRAM that doesn't immediately say "for OSX" or "For Linux v2353416.666" and show me it crash just by loading or doing basic functions with it.Splaetos wrote:the moment you want to use something that is not MS, you are at risk of running into problems. Thats my problem with M$.
i think you must be talking about Macs, nothing i've ever loaded that crashes is ever the result of Windows/MS, it's programmer error.
as for history, Jobss began personal computers by stealing corporate components and playing with them ("Homebrew Computer Club"), and then began building useful applications and eventually sold it. Mr. Gates came in, blackmailed, and built a monopolous industry out of the stolen parts and hacked programs. So, you can say we're discussing this because of Gates stealing something. But in reality, we're here because Jobs stole more.
either way it goes, i doubt anyone can claim we're not better off without both of the guys.

I didnt say the word crash, I said problems. Using a program not of the windows ilk can tend to confound their Utopian view of platform integration, leading often to unexpected and often annoying errors. A simple way to observe such phenomenon is simply to consistently not use their browsers and media player.
I would disagree with who stole more and innovated more in that scenario, but there is little proof for any of it, and fewer solid facts. Doesnt really matter though, that comment was inspired by my incredulity at the comment that seemed to imply apple was some sort of come-lately leech. M$ clearly won the computer wars, leaving apple to play perpetual second fiddle, but they are, and always have been that second fiddle, and have always marketed themselves(well since the 90's) in basically some form of the same fashion they use now. The cool, easy, creative alternative to the stuffy imb based M$.
I wont deny anyone thier right to like M$, but personally, ive spent the last 15 years or so wanting to slam keyboards because something or other didnt want to work, all the while mumbling to myself about how much i missed DOS.

How about wincrap itself? Or internet exploiter? Or office?lizardkid wrote:find me ONE PROGRAM that doesn't immediately say "for OSX" or "For Linux v2353416.666" and show me it crash just by loading or doing basic functions with it.
See above. What if it's a m$ programmer?lizardkid wrote:i think you must be talking about Macs, nothing i've ever loaded that crashes is ever the result of Windows/MS, it's programmer error.
Gates has always been a bastard. He tricked IBM into contracting them for M$-DOS before they even had it. It was after the deal was made that they bought a crappy QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System - the name says it all; it was still in early alpha and m$ sold it as a final product) from a company the name of which I can't remember right now, and as far as I can remember (watch The Pirates Of The Silicon Valley, it's all explained there) it wasn't the only one they made such fishy business.lizardkid wrote:as for history, Jobss began personal computers by stealing corporate components and playing with them ("Homebrew Computer Club"), and then began building useful applications and eventually sold it. well to get back to the topic at hand....
Firefox is now off default status heh... =/
Opera is going on I guess. Firefox 2 is having serious issues logging into things, no problems with IE7 opera maxthon etc... so right now I just cant use it... even if I could stand the double process crashes, which I cant. This could all be fixed with configuration, I dunno, but it shouldnt be THIS bad under any configuration =/
eh I liked FF too... Opera isnt so bad tho with a new skin.

not sure if this is 'new' information... or work from a beta. IE7 seems to work better... but i have alot of safeguards to make ie6 work... so hard to tell..."Microsoft doesn’t plan to fully support the latest CSS standard in IE 7.0. Instead of using well-established Web standards, IE 7.0 will continue to foist proprietary technologies on Web developers, forcing them to choose between two competing ways of creating Web sites. […]
anyway this is the problem with the MS philosophy on life.
expressed well as such:
checking again, this article was from 4 months ago... gotta research some more i guess. In any case... this is another outward symptom of the core problem that prevents me from being impartial about MS products on a case by case...Perhaps Microsoft is relying on their huge lead in the browser market, and the fact that IE7 will come pre-installed on Vista, to continue their non-compliant browser dominance. Oy, I really thought Microsoft was over that tactic…
