anybody got any tips for the following -

How to land the spitfire on the carrier. (eg, proper airspeed etc) ?

How to best target a bombing run from the b-17 ?

how to best target a torpedo run at the carrier ?

I think we should get a flight together sometime :)

Oh well some tips if you want practice...

Carrier landing: hold 90 kts steady, gear down early.. throttle at about 35%.. most of all go easy on the plane, never let the speed drop below 80 kts, don't brake unless you got plenty of speed.. at these speeds you should never pull up if you're descending too fast, instead increase the throttle. Approach relatively high, so you stay clear of the magnet stern :P .. only need about half the deck for a safe landing anyway. Once you are almost above the carrier, put throttle on idle (don't cut it), hold brake (use) and force your plane down violently if needed (it can take quite a beating).. once your wheels are on the ground you will slow down very rapidly... steer with mouse if needed so you don't fall off the deck. Voil? you made a safe landing 8-)

Bombing with the b-17 is a bit of a luck game :P , is mostly practice.. just make sure you approach steady and level (never make a turn, bombs will go everywhere), and release early. In fact this works best if you fly low, just high enough to survive.

Same story for the torpedoes, bit of luck, bit of practice.. either way they have to be aimed very well in front of the carrier... I recommended releasing the torpedo as soon as the carrier starts to fire at you.. just launch and get the hell outta there (get a new torpedo), it's very unlikely you'll survive a run through the flak if you're alone. Another successful method is to use a dive attack.. climb up very high, about 20,000 ft, above the flak.. then just comfortably fly to the carrier, usually you'll be out of reach for enemy fighters too... then dive vertically on the carrier, the big guns won't have the elevation to hit you, so you can come pretty close. Aim the torpedo on the deck before the pompoms open up because they'll put you on fire pretty soon.. oh I forgot to say this method is usually suicidal :wink:

Hope this helps some... have fun 8-)

i just realized why jv made Sky Limit.

School project.

a flight sounds good though, i'm about halfway around the world but if there's a French server i think i can handle it. Don't know why, but the French servers i go to have amazing pings for being some overseas.

Haha you're quick liz :P , but yah that's kinda true... I learned lots from it :)

Landing on carrier is just practice ;), I just landed a spitfire with a full bomb load from the front, while it was making a turn :P

JV left out the part where i hit the carrier with 2 torpedos just before and it was sinking at the time.

Ive got the hang of bombing with the b17 and even torpedoing the carrier (your right it makes a big difference if others are present - you can get in closer). But I haven't mastered the carrier landing yet - well with the swordfish its easy but i cant get my approach right with the spitfire. working on it :)

JV - How can I modify the suspended licence to turn it off/on w/cvar or set the duration. We need a noob mode for practicing lol

I looked in every script and couldnt find it.

Ah yah have to admit skylimit isn't very customizable... but the value you should change is in global/skylimit/main.scr :

level.SL_SUSPENSION_TIME = 45.0 // penalty time for teamdamage / selfdamage (s)

I see where i can add a cvar to have the option to remove the flake from team dog fight (requested from my group). Is it possible to do this for the carrier too? I couldn't figure a way.

Hmm well isn't really 'possible' but you can hack it in if you want :P

In global/skylimit/vehicle.scr, line 266-268 you find:

Code: Select all

flak_think:

local.FIRE_WHILE_SINKING_TIME = 2.5 // s
Add a line there:

Code: Select all

flak_think:
if(level.SL_GAMETYPE != "obj") end
local.FIRE_WHILE_SINKING_TIME = 2.5 // s
And any flaks will be disabled when not in obj mode.
