New graphics card

Post by Jack Ruby »

I have never ever been able to turn any game up to full settings
and it still be playable.

I just bought a BFG 7800gs oc 256 AGP

I have been playing battlefield2 but every setting had to be minimum,
I bought the 7800 installed it but could only set a couple things to high,
found a really short thread somewhere that said reinstall mobo firmware,
nforce3, I have a K8N Neo2 Platinum agp board,

WOW, I have bf2 running at 1280x960@85mhz every setting on full and it plays sooo smooth.

I bought 2gb ram running it dual channel too, so all in all about ?350 and a whole day getting drivers and tweaking, overclocked the gfx card to 480Mhz Core and 1.40ghz Memory, never tried overclocking before but its all running like a dream.

If your still running agp I highly recommend the card, bf2 at max settings I didnt think was possible, my friend has dual pci cards and I reckon his setup lags, my agp shit is perfect.

I run the 3dmark 2005 test, 6710 was my score, I dont know if thats good or not?

With that system you should try the new "Company of Heroes" game. The graphics are amazing with my RADEON X800 SE card, even though most of the settings are on low or medium.

I picked up a copy of company of heroes but it still costs ?30 so instead I bought FEAR for ?10 and Blazing Angels for ?10. Only played FEAR for a couple mins but it looks totally stunning, Blazing Angels is all set to high, looks like it might be a cool game though graphics are not on the same level as bf2 or fear. I will get company of heroes when the price comes down a little.

Happy New Year by the way :)

I've heard overclocking can cause thermal problems. have you measured the heat. I have a program that warns me if a certain temperature is reached.

what processor r u running?

The card runs at about 44-46 degrees when idle and about 56 degrees under load, I read up and people have had their cards running at 70degrees with no problems. I never tried overclocking before, I used a thing called coolbits, I think it only works on nvidia cards, I downloaded it here: http://www.guru3d.com/

My processor is an athlon 64 3000 which my system properties says is 1.8ghz, 2 gb dual channel ram, I played fear for an hour last night, very spooky, it seemed to be running a bit too fast, kinda made me feel sick, maybe need to slow my mouse down or it might have been cos the game itself is so claustrophobic, lots of flashing lights and stuff, whatever, it made me feel slightly sick.

BF2 though is still stunning, I keep getting shot while I admire the scenery.

Those are really good temps anything under 50c at idle is good .

I got 9036 but I am running 2 evga nvidia 6800 gt cards in sli mode . I think that score is at or above average for a single card .

I was getting some glitching when there was smoke on BF2 after playing for an hour, I lowered the overclock settings a little, all seems fine, I never knew my machine was capable of throwing the gfx around like it does, im very impressed.

I found the disc for my mobo, installed a little prog called "core centre, cool n quiet", I read mostly that I should uninstall it, it lets you overclock your mobo and tells you the temperatures of the system, my athlon runs at 1.8mhz standard, I had it running at 1.93mhz, it seemed to be running fine, then I noticed my cpu temp was about 58 degrees, so I set my system back to default 1.8mhz, it seems to be about 51-55 degrees in normal use, just a browser and xp running. I read 55 is about the maximum temp that anyone should see, IS THIS TRUE? I have a Gigabyte 3D Cooler(Link)

Does anyone know realistic cpu temps that I should be seeing? I think my cooler should be sufficient, it might be pretty dusty though.

Apart from the temp worry, I rigged up another hard drive, its 60gb, only displaying as 30gb, I had a look at it with XP computer management tool and also Acronis Disk Director Suite, I cant find the other 30gb, any ideas?

edit: I also have 2 sticks of 256mb PC3200 crucial ballistix ram, a MSI Geforce 5600 256 AGP and finally an Asus v9999 6800GT 128mb AGP for sale!

My P4 3GHz always runs at 55-60 degrees in normal use, jumps up to 65 when usage is above 50%. I guess it's normal, I read somewhere that its average core temperature is 65 degrees.

Its high def and 122Mbs, so it will take a while to load. The card is around $600 US, so we can look, but not touch! :(

That vid of the 8800 is amazing, are consoles ever gonna catch up with us?
Anyone play xbox360 online yet? I am interested to know how 360 compares to pc both in graphics and online playability.

Anyways, I bought a new keyboard, super simple one no flashy stuff and a logitech G3 laser mouse 2000dpi, formatted my pc, my computer is flying now, its all working so fast and perfect, I am still getting used to it, totally happy with my gfx card, its stunning, a big thumbs up for it from me and it didnt cost too much.

The new mouse, it recognises that you have loaded a game and goes into 2000dpi mode, super accurate, head shots all the way, great fun

That looks cool, I am a little wary of installing it right now though, I am running some legacy drivers that I got from guru3d.com, I read in a lot of places they were the best for my card and I also installed coolbits which I got from guru3d too, coolbits opens up the overclocking options for my card, I let it do its scan then I slightly lowered the settings it applied, its all running so perfectly I dont know if I should try to fix it now that its not broken.

even so, I am tempted to install nhancer and break what I have now :)

I installed it and it can be set to not run all the time. It works with the normal controls and does not replace them. I haven't figured out how to use it yet.

I have a Gforce 7300 GS card now, so I will check out those downloads you mentioned.
