Skinning - Where do I start?

Im new to skinning. How do I get started? What program do I need and where can I find tutorials?

for player skins, you'll need three basic programs:
  • pakscape (creates pk3 files)
    text editor (for scripts, notepad works fine)
    image editor (textures, any image editor will do as long as it opens .tga files)
hell, i use a freebe image editor called photoIT! 2002.

It's the best tut out there. If you know photoshop well enough ... it shouldn't matter if the tut is for paintshop or Gimp ( another good free image editing software ! )

yeah most image editors have all the same basic functionalities, it's easy enough to port them around. Besides, the main difference between them are the higher level wizards and functions they have, which you won't use a lot in skinning.
