Post by Jack Ruby »

Hope your all doing well, I check in often but have not had anything worth saying so I didnt say anything.

My latest news is newest website that im building, its for a nightclub that has rock bands on the beach in Ibiza (Ibiza=Small sun drenched island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Website is about 90% together and working, tweaks all weekend and hopefully live on monday night, it comes in a few parts:

http://www.ibizarocks.com/index1.html

The cool bit is I might get to do live streaming of some of the gigs, they will fly me out and pay for my hotel and get backstage pass, how fricken cool would that be, you should all keep your fingers crossed for me.

Wow, cool gig! I had to look it up on Goggle Earth. Its a small island off the West coast of Spain.

What's up with all the headless people? Are you going for a massage like, "At Ibiza Rocks, the music will blow your head off!"? Also, on the ibizarocks.com page, the meaasage seems to be "Have sex, take drugs, then come to our club for rock-n-roll!"

pleased to report it works fine on Vista and XP on both IE6 and IE7.

nice site, simpler than some of your others but still a solid one.

i suppose the diagonal-ness of the whole thing makes it a bit difficult to design for.

Good to see you too PKM.

Tom, the sex and drugs thing, the guys doing this ibiza rocks thing also run another huge nightclub called Manumission, a few thousand people every night throughout the summer, from what I hear its an insane place, live sex shows and all kinds of deviancy.

Lizard, the more browsers and systems I get feedback on the better.
I am using some pretty cool scripts that anchor different elements to different corners of the page and also to make the gallery and video play fullscreen in your browser. The fullscreen stuff is quite tricky, it triggers at the wrong time and expands the flash movie to a million% or something similar, im loading in .flv video and trying to predict the right moment to trigger the fullscreen.

I just got the fullscreen video running this afternoon, the fonts are gonna be weirded out as I dont have the correct font on this machine and need to publish it with correct font but all the functionality is the same, it should all work. I am at the point now where I have to make flash realise whether an mp3 or video is playing and if im playing video turn off the mp3 and vice versa.

Check out the homepage with the editors video playing, click the "view fullscreen" button and let me know what happens, it should make all the navigation disappear and the video should play fullscreen, if it works I will be a happy man :)

ps: it does not look like such a technological site but the gigs and gallery sections are totally dynamic and driven by xml with a customn content management system for the owners of the club to log in and update the site. Its pretty cool.

PS again: The coolest site I have seen for a long time is for bubble gum, you just gotta love Dancing Kevin: http://www.theultimatebubble.com/index.html

Hey Hog, im doing good, how are you doing?

Well the Ibiza site was meant to be finished Friday, its now tuesday and I just finished it, I think.

I have tried breaking the site and so far it seems pretty stable, everything is resizing to fill the browser and it all seems to be working.

I sent the link over to the client tonight, fingers crossed it all works for them, I am a lil worried about slow connections glitching the site out but hey if your connection is slow it must be time to upgrade.

Heres the link I sent over, if you break the site or notice anything weird please let me know how you broke it or what you found weird :)

looks good so far, havent tried other browsers than IE7 tho.
Only bad is the pictures size in the gallery. Dunno the Backend technique (esp regarding the free scaling) but even in fullscreen these pictures imho must not have more than 300kB

Wacko, the gallery pics taking too long to load for you?

That was the one thing on my list that I forgot to do, my boss saved the jpegs and made some of them 800k?? You would think my boss would know better than that.

I will recompress them first thing AM tomorrow.

ps, the images are 1024 but can scale to whatever size, scale the page any higher than 1024 and they lose quality but thats fine with me, the whole look of the site is kinda rough anyway.

How does the video stream play for you?
Many breaks of loong buffering?

1st of all, unfortunately I just have 384kB downstream, so I'm rather an ISDN than a DSL user :(
Then starting the video(?!) on home, I get
3minutes of nothing (not even a preloader)
then 1 minute of music
3minutes of nothing (not even a preloader)
then 1 minute of music
3minutes of nothing
than I quitted
Not sure whether this WAS the video, because I couldn't find anotherone but didn't see a single image

Ok Wacko, I just saved out the gallery pics again, I will upload them again, the biggest is 200k and smallest about 60k, should be much smoother for you.

The video is about 13mb, I buffer it for quite a while but buffered for broadband at least 512 I guess though here im on 2mb, I think I can get the video to about 9mb, I will try.

The fullscreen video pulls in the same flv file as the homepage, I was kinda hoping some of the flv had cached before you go fullscreen or maybe as it didnt load completely it didnt cache, my main pain has been getting it all working, I will try to optimise the filesizes now.

Thanks for your input Wacko, helped a lot.
