[solved] Ladder not working: weird

Post by Valoche »

Hi,
I just created a ladder: constructed the elements with nice, small detail brushes. Added a brush with the "common/ladder" texture, added "func_ladder" to it, and sat the angle properly.

It compiles fine, but when I want to climb up my ladder in the game, I have this message in the console: "ladder start position is blocked by a solid object".

I checked and checked again that my ladder brush was not touching ANY other brush, but the problem is still there, I'm going mad. I never found anything related on the forums or in the tuts, so...

An idea someone ? Thanks.

---- SOLUTION ----
Even if the default angle is 0 (I guess), you HAVE to set angle=0 in the entity window. What's really weird is that I could climb down the ladder even with no angle sat.
Anyway... :D

Don't know, sounds like you may have an errant brush that is invisible... BUT, your 'function_ladder' brush (pink) needs to overlap the ladder by a couple units... I make mine about 2 units over the ladder rails and rungs, doubt that is the problem, but might be. Never saw that error before.

I think it's the angle of your func_ladder.

Why would you need to overlap the brushes? I've done lots of ladders and never overlapped anything.

By the way, does anybody know how to do a ladder that doesn't go straight up? I have a ladder that is leaning slightly and if I lean the func_ladder I still seem to go straight up.

If you 'lean' a ladder you don't even need the 'function_ladder'. I've built brush ladders/steps that can be climbed with as little an offset as 2 units or maybe it was 4 units?? Anyway you can do it easily and in some cases it works well.

Yes, I managed to do much the same thing with a bending staircase (close to the center). The problem there is that the player climbs the stair or ladder to darn quick.
