In the vis stage of compile the compilers devide the empty space in the map into vis portals . It decides where to make the cuts using the structural brushes and hint brushes . After the compiler has "portaled" the map it decides which portals can "see" other portals . If you could draw a straight line from one portal to another without touching a structual brush then that portal can "see" the other and if the player is in that portal everthing in both portals will draw effecting the frames per second . Things like stairs for example don't help portaling much they just create extra portals if they are structual so you would just make the stairs detail and they will be ignored during vis compile and would reduce the size of vis data and probably make your compile take less time . Any brush that does not help vis should be made detail to lower vis data size . Usually major brushes like the walls and the floor , roof and walls of the buildings are the main structual brushes . That is the way you should design your map as well the player should never be able to see too much the computer has to draw everything he sees and some stuff he can't see depending on how the map is portaled .
