This thread cracks me up :)

I see it getting a bit pedantic, even down to was it meant to be an "A" or wasnt it ?

Marine my fellow countryman, no point bitching about friendly fire incidents, happens all the time, and how many British died in Iraq during this war from enemy fire ? 28 I read earlier ! So seems to me our American cousins are taking a lot of the fire instead of our boys, 1000+ Americans so far. I feel we owe them some kind of debt for that.

American cousins, Great Britain is a stalwart of power in Europe and indeed the world. Always has been always will be ( hopefully). I read much earlier in the thread about the attack on New Orleans, maybe we lost a battle, and indeed the war. At the time Great Britain was in control of two thirds of the entire globe, the Greatest Empire in History :)

I often wondered how we let the USA go, I imagine we had bigger fish to fry in India, China etc...

I like to think that we let it go as really it wasnt too much different to a civil war, our own brothers and cousins fighting eachother. It was a serious war but not so serious that Britain would neglect our other fingers in all the other pies around the globe. We knew we could work with you guys after the cease of hostilities, and now at this point in time, where are we ?? Seems the most staunch allies against a hostile world :)

Good idea seeing that in 10,000 years time "mankind" may be extinct given that women actually don't need men to breed any more - ooops.

Anyway back to the heated topic at hand....

At the time of the "Wars of Independence" the UK was far more concerned with kicking France's ass ! The French were far more dangerous to the stability of the Empire than the US was. In fact France and the UK were still fighting at the time of the US Civil War (We were never one to miss a good fight :D , especially if France was involved) Plus the US wouldn't have got pissed off if they were allowed more autonomy, etc. If fact there were many "Loyal" americans fighting on the UK side as there were "Rebels" ... annnyway....

As any student of history will tell you, History moves in patterns and often tends to repeat itself over and over again. From time immamorial certain people / countries have tried to dominate large parts of the world: Romans, Greeks, Mongels, France, Britain, Germany ... all have tried and failed in their various methods ........

Whilst the US claims to be acting as the worlds policeman, is it any wonder that people have cause to doubt it. Most Americans will admit that the US is far from perfect. So why should people instantly welcome American intervention ??

Whilst I don't respect their current President, and I am against the way that you are trying to shape the world, I can in some ways accept that the world needs changing, and that the US as the worlds only Superpower must lead the way. Just not in their way.

When Britain carved their Empire, they did it for power, control and to "civilise" the world. (the Romans did the same thing, for the same reason 1000 years before) Unfortunately the British thought that their way of life was THE only way of life possible...... in much the same way that the US thinks that THEIR way of Democracy is the only way forward. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a change to Democracy CANNOT be forced upon a country............it must come from Internal pressure... of course it can be helped along the way, but Democracy at gunpoint !!! thats not a real democracy at all.........

What happens if come the election, the Iraqi people decide that they don't want anyone with any connections to the US in power. What happens if, to go to extremes, by popular vote, someone who is deeply religious and ANti-american gets in??? What does the US do then ? If it does nothing, then its just replaced one dictator who was hated by the majority of people, with a leader who has a solid power base and has been elected by the process of Democracy. What happens if the Oil supply dries up? If it invades again, or replaces that leader, then the US is a massive hippocrite. So how can we trust the US to run an election in another country when it can barely run an election in its own back yard without it decending into farce ??

If the US wants to be held as the golden standard, I have no problem with that. I would welcome a "big brother" that countries can aspire to, look up to and that the UK could count on as a friend. But that country must also be able to recognise the flaws it has within itself...

Well that went on a bit longer than I thought it would.... sorry bout that ... anyway Marine, please try to keep your language clean mate ;

It wasn't too long, to mee that is, but it was interesting.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I was, at first, 'for' the war (when I thought that Iraq had nuclear weapons). But now I'm just confused with why the hell we invaded Iraq, if Bush knew there were no WOMD or for another reason like oil. Now I am against the war, but pulling out now would not be good. Now we are too far into it to be able to just leave them. I wasn't too happy about what I heard when there weren't any WOMD and I am a Bush fan. Although my thoughts of Bush did go down when I heard that, I still don't like the idea that we may have an indecicive president (Kerry). He has changed his mind on too many things for me to think too highly of him. He goes "Whichever way the wind blows."

ok i have many things to say on this topic:

I apologise loads for all the stuff i said, i don't actually think half the stuff i said. it is no secret i do have a problem with some US views, but i agree with other views, similair to what i think of my own government. half that crap i have sed in this thread was out of order, i have been through some er.. difficulties in my personal life and i apologise as much as possible that certain .map users who read my unreasonable rantings got the brunt of it.

So i would like to apologise to everyone who has read my posts, and i hope y'all will just remember the m4rine that was not the one that err... wrote the rubbish in this thread. mostly apologise to hogleg and all strafer and all them arguing valid points against invalid ones. alll square now, right?

I don't hold grudges, and I think everyones entitled to their opinion.

I also think that some good comes out of these politicle debates, I found myself more interested in global politics, more aware of how other countries see us.
Keeps me awake while Im surfin this forum. :o

I much prefer someone who's not scared to voice their opinion rather than the person who is always bending towards the majority.
