Your best bet is to use a browser thats uncommon. I have been using Firefox for a long time and it works great. I can visit the same pages with IE and Adaware along with Spybot go crazy.

The bad part is im sure its a matter of time before Firefox will be the target of spyware developers.

Adaware and Spybot have been mentioned but both come with "anti-spyware features". Spybots is free and Adawares costs. Both do an excellent job is stopping the spyware from installing.

When you installing Spybot you have the option to turn on the "anti-spyware features" (I cant remember the exact names). When something tries to install itself, it will popup a window asking you for permission to do so. If you have not installing anything and this happens you are under attack but now you can stop it.

Its a great feature for free....you cant beat it.

On the main page, the menu with index >> a | b | ... << index, click on A and you get services/help for stuff that begins with A.

Open the windows services manager, sort them alphabetically by name and then go through each and read on eldergeek about it. It explains if some services are necessary and which can be disabled, set to manual or set to auto.

Can be long the first time, but worth it if you can remember the critical ones you must NOT stop.
