This thread makes me feel melancholy. I was going to say bitter, but I'm not feeling cynical enough at the moment.
I agree that MoH is dying, but I'm going to go down with the ship. I enjoy CoD, but I'm going to keep making maps and keep attempting to learn how to do things that will push the envelope. Why? Partly because I'm stubborn, but mostly because I still love the game, even if fewer people do year after year. The one thing that I think MoH still has going for it are the FANTASTIC single-player campaigns that people are making (Das Ende most recently) for it. Single-Player, to me, has always played second-fiddle to multiplayer (especially to mappers), and it's a damn shame, because a good single-player map is a work of art.
As far as comparing CoD's single-player to Moh's, I don't even want to try. They're not the same, and I don't see the point. But that's the great thing about being a mapper: You can create what you like and don't like.
For those of you who are moving on:
Thanks for everything you've put into Medal of Honor, and I think I speak for the entire Mapping/Modding community when I say best of luck to you in all of your future projects.

Yeah, I was feeling pretty Melancholy when I started it. Seeing the best Mohaa maps recreated with such quality in COD UO made me wonder how anyone can go back to (what some people call...) SLOWhaa. There is a new version of Destroyed Village now that I have to take a look at.
On top of that, By developing a map for multiple game platforms, I was getting a really good idea just how much different Mohaa radient is from other quake III engine games.
While trying to get my terrain working, I've realized how much more shader support there is for those using q3map 2 and other games like Jedi Knight, SOF2, and RTCW. I'm a little late getting pissed off at EA about how little they have supported the game. Incorporating some additional LOD and shader support would do wonders for this game.
I've also realized just how frickin' huge my new map is compared to the stock ones. So I'm not thrilled that I have to build the terrain twice - once in LOD for Mohaa, once as brushes for ET. I've been working on that for 3 weeks now.

But the size is necessary to accomodate the player speed differences in ET and the objective version for mohaa.
I may try to convert this map over to COD UO. But I'll probably wait to see what COD 2 is like. Other than that, the new Enemey Territory: Quake Wars might be the direction I go for mapping in the future.
Note to Self:
Not a good idea to wait until an engine is obsolete to start mapping with it.

Well, comparitively, MOHAA has become a legend, i daressay with UT and Quake. It started a new sub-genre, even if it used old tech for todays standards, and it was made as one of the most moddable games. (easiest for me to mod, HL/HL2, despite their rep, are not that easy to make cool things happen in)
I like MOH's SP capabilities, it's got cool features and unlimited mapping capabilities.
CoD does too, but it was designed for faster machines and better gamers.
but MoH is great, undeniably, CoD2 will be, BiA is, most all bigname WW2 shooters are excellent.
As for me, i love them all

It's sad. I was really enjoying mapping and pursuing some novel ideas two summers back, but then went abroad to Japan and lived without PC or modding. I'm back now and just graduated, am diving back in and working on some interesting things, but I keep slowing because I KNOW that aside from my small clan, I'll likely have little more than a player here or there download it and run about. No entry into rotation on others' servers at all, I'm sure. I don't know what to do.

I think the only way to generate a lot of interest to the community at large nowadays (and ensure an audience) is to go along the route of doing something big (like a total conversion), because those are more than just one individual custom map; when the game has new skins, models, menus, and maps, it gives the game a facelift, so to speak. Instead of playing the same old game, it's different enough to have that feeling of novelty, which helps to rejuvenate the game, I think.
Mohaa is over three years old now, so the only people who play it regularly are diehards who've most likely seen and played a lot of custom maps and mods. The only thing that will excite them is something different and novel. Another custom map isn't going to excite anyone unless it is excellent (and let's face it, very few custom maps are).
I continue to keep mapping because I personally enjoy the challenge of making something by hand on my own.

Ive got to disagree there. A large number of people I see on MOH servers these days are newish. Some say 'im new' some you can tell by watching them, and most you can tell that they are not extremely good or anything, as you might expect diehards to be.
Anyhow, I bought COD and UO yesterday, and played it for about an hour. The population difference is staggering, tho im not sure I like the game or not yet. On a lower end system it is not 'beuatiful, im sure it looks a bit better, but I dont notice as much while im playing. Oh except terrain of course. Hehe my MOH skills do translate a bit when using a rifle, I dont even need a pointer (joined a couple servers where it was disabled, and besides in cod its a motion one depending on movement.) Sniping is appropriately hard, BUT i have yet to find an appropriately good sniping spot...(only played like 4 maps in a couple hours) so with the extra time it takes to fix on your target with scope, im usualy dead.
Mg's seem to be mostly in between stock mohaa and realism mohaa... but the m1 seemed to do less damage then an mg or smg whatever i was getting shot with...
I dunno jury is still out, but at least there are lots of people on servers with <50 pings. At all hours.

hmm i just played 'the bridge' on COD.... and pretty much hated it...
scenery looked better... buildings a little sharper but the lighting was horrible.
