I've spent a few years mapping in a few diff communities - I never really got in to Q3 mapping but i've read a lot of stuff on it...CSG is a simple maths algorithm - and yes it can be used safely for the most basic of tasks, but for anything more complicated than carving a 4 sided hole in a flat wall it starts really screwing things up - this isn't just my view - its the view of a lot of respected people who have been working with the Q3 engine for a long time. So its just better to get into the habit of never using it. And by problem i don't just mean obvious ones. It can create invisible brushes, create brushed that are for all intents and purposes infinitely long, cause havok with the VIS process, the list goes on...Hence why I am sooo against using it, not only for me but for all the newbies out there who come to this site.

Well cheers for the reply and as i said i dont use CSG cos of the reasons that you have stated but it does seem that for the mundane things like doors/windows(simple shapes) it is feasable that u could use CSG without any major problems.
Dont know if this is right and maybe it needs to b tested but if u can do this for simple shapes then this will save a hell of a lot of time.
Obviously i still mean by sticking strictly to the grid.
thanks again for quick response.

Ok guys think I have it solved and boy was I making mistakes. What I do is load my "project" file first then use only "load" and browse to my map file. This seems to have eliminated the over lapping brushes.

kdja got me thinking and I'm just happy to move past this problem. Very greatful for the assistance and suggestions. I figure kdja, Moal, and Surgeon can split the $150 for $50 each. Send me addresses and the checks are on their way :) :)

I have used csg for my doors and windows. It seemed to be okay
with the windows as long as you cut them all at once. Keep cutting
them seperately and it seems to make more brushes. I would also
suggest that if you do use csg for windows and doors that you go
back and eliminate the brushes that you can and make a
replacement brush for say two brushes that were there before.

The thing with CSG, as i've already said is that its a very simple program - it doesn't care how many brushes it creates - so long as those brushes are all "legal" ones. I've got used to building walls with windows/doors in them because I can be guarunteed that I've used the least no. of brushes possible...

lol kdja, not sure you could make a living answering my questions but the way things are going, you just might lol. The deeper I get into map making the harder it seems. Had trouble with the design part, haven't even tried scripting yet! Oh well on ward and hopefully upward :).

On a serious note, greatful for the all the help. I appreciate it a lot.
