Tltrude... You just reminded me of something...

"I do not believe in a fate that falls upon men no matter how they act... I do believe in a fate that falls upon men when they do not act..."

Gilbert Keith Chesterton.

(And, by the way... That's something I've learned from a violent video game... )

Well, I dont think there is anything bad to say about violent video games that portray real life history i.e. moh, cod, black hawk down and so on. Also I tend not to have games like max payne and hitman on the pc, cause this is the type of behavior we dont need children to see. If I tell my 6 year old that moh and cod and such are games about real events that took place in the past, I firmly believe he will have a greater interest in history of the world as he grows up. The other aspect is games like doom, half life, and unreal. These are also fine in my book because they deal with aliens and creatures we really dont see. (easily explained away as a game). Tom brought up a good point in that we cant teach our children to be "blind" to humans natural tendencies. It is in our blood to be violent at times, but also to be careing and kind. A balance that has to be tought by parents. "Tree hugers" are the downfall of this day and age, and if left unchecked they will lull the country into a state of complacency, and we will be attacked (like 9-11) on a regular basis. I have a question for everyone. Does anyone else believe we need a stricter judicial system, and to incorporate things somewhat like the middle east (but not that extreme). And I dont mean the whole middle eastern continent, simply the "eye for an eye" type of thing?

I'll stop there before I fill a hundred pages. :D

Afternoon, ziptie2k2.

An-eye-for-an-eye always seems like an appropriate punishment to curb some peoples undesirable tendencies.
However... :P

What would you do to child molesters? Surely not molest their own child. So what could possibly be the punishment?

A rapist would get their donger guillotined.

What about car accidents? Note: not car crashes where the driver is a stupid pr**k. True acidents would be punishable how?

The practicalities for an-eye-for-an-eye are far too complex to implement well.

Cheers,
Scronty

I agree, however this would pertain mainly to felony crimes. Obveously if someone molests a child than maybe this person should also have there private parts removed and there tongue too. Basically what I'm getting at is the motivation to stop YOURSELF from commiting crimes. The threat of violence if used properly is a very useful tool. I know if I were to commit a crime and knew the punishment would be 2-7 yrs in prison, for one it will realistically be 1-2 yrs, and also with the liberties you get now days in prison I would be less inclined to commit that crime if there were a threat of beating my ass with clubs for 2 or 3 straight days.

whew. this is going to be long.

my grandpa was is WWII himself as a flying fortress airman (coms gear i believe) and i'd never taken much interest in him until MOH came out and i wanted to know if he'd been near any of those places MOHAA visits. e wasn't, but now im a WWII geek (one more thing to add to my geek list) and just absolutely love MOH and WWII stuff. so if i'd never gotten MOH i'd never been able to know what i do now.

on the other hand, games like grand theft auto i find fun as well because they're unusual and free. but i would never do such things as in those games. some of those are just sick.

i know reward rather than punishment is more effective to me, if someone were to say....
"clean your room or no desert to you!"
i'd have a worse attitude about it and be ruled by fear. on the other hand...
"clean your room and you'll get an extra scoop of dessert"
i'd be zooming up to room so fast that you'd think a wild saber toothed chipmunk was after me  .

what about you, compare it, since we have nothing to gain from doing a task or not doing it, we are less apt to want it.
but if there's light at the end of the tunnel, we've got something to gain from something, we'll probably do it. thus reality TV. :)

a good citizen award or cash bonus would be nice, or a small tax levy (like 10% off taxes) for people who haven't committed a crime in 5-10 years. exempting minors. (oh wait, that's me!)

whew, better stop before people start nodding off inside their coffee cups listeneing to me. :D

You know, when I was younger I thought the same way you do now. But a friend of mine had a very strict father and any time I ever go visit him his house, cars, garage and everything else is clean and in its proper place. Not that way with me. I guess what I'm getting at is that there are things we are supposed to do and not supposed to do WITHOUT incentive programs or the threat of violence. They however have the same drawback. Once you start to recieve rewards for simple or difficult duties, you will come to expect rewards for everything you do. On the other hand if the threat of violence is used on a weaker mind that cannot comprehend why they are being punished, then you can have a psycho in the making.

i see your point. heh, that's why there are no 14-year-old politicians.
I guess that might unbalence the economy a bit too, cutting taxes on nearly the whole population every five years.

wow, a nice little political talk going on here, stemming on violent video games.

Thanks for shortening that link Bjarne, I was getting worried about JV_map's state of mind.

come to it, i was thinking on that eye-for-eye thing, and whoever carried out these punishments would be jsut as fair for punishment as the person he delived it to.

say someone shot an innocent pedestrian, he would be shot as well, but whoever shot him would be granted the same punishment....
wouldn;t work, we'd be hippocrats.
