LOL, Ahhhhhh!!!!! My head just popped.
I'd say have the .map done in 30 mins, compiling doesn't count.
That is exactly what I said in my first post....
ok, what time the 24th? any?
Do you have to be so technical?
how about 12:00 AM (midnight)

yes i do, i thought we were starting at a time and ending half an hour later, seemed to me that's how it'd be done... o well, your idea, your competition.

As he said, you can make as many maps as you wish, but you get only 30 minutes to make each .map file. So, you can start any time you wish, and post or send them all before midnight (your time) on the 24th.
The script, also, does not count time wise. You guys sure can't read very well because he also said you dont have to sign up, just post it or send it.

One more thing, if you only have 30 mins surely you won't have anything to script.
script

Hmmm, if the script does not count against the time, you can spawn stuff into the map like models, dynamic lights, explosion entities, AI, etc... Also, you can add your sounds with the script, by spawning speakers, and adding background sound. You can even make shaders for new textures you added during the 30 min. You don't get points for scripting, so you can get help with it.

30 min

Man, 30 minute maps are tough to *#$%&! do. I've had to start over from scratch three times, so far. One good trick is to leave yourself about 5 minutes to go back and fix textures. So it would be, map for 25 min, compile and test, map for 5 min, final compile.
Another good trick is to work on the .map file with wordpad--still counts as mapping time. It is very easy, and fast, to completly replace a texture with wordpad's find and replace feature.

30 minutes? You guys are nuts!
For myself, trying to see how much I can build in 30 minutes is a migrane waiting to happen. So I wouldn't take part in this anyway. But I wanted to make an observation as an impartial observer regarding your competition rules.
Technically, I think your guys are cheating by allowing such a large amount of time with the script. If you are going to judge "Mapping" quality, then scripts should be irrelevant. Just enough to run the map. This really sounds like a "Scripting" competition to me to see how much stuff you can add to a minimalist map. By your own admission, your spawn scripting can alter 3 of the 5 categories: Layout, Lghting, and certainly Fun.
I guess most of you are experienced enough for it, but a competition like this completely excludes any newer mappers who have no idea how to spawn things through scripts. You say that the script does not count toward the judging. But I guarantee that the real competition here will be won by the person who is able to pull off the most bells and whistles after his 30 minutes are already up.
I think you should break this into 2 competitions. The first part to see who can make the best map in 30 minutes. The second competition would be to see who can improve their map the most through scripting.

well Diego, it's alright. we can always change stuff, this is the first of these anyway.
i'll admit my map is really small and i consider myself a pretty decent mapper/scripter, but i didn't have time to set up a ton of triggers and stuff within my map, it was a strain to finish it in 25 mins, after that it was all triggers...
mine's sp, as always for me, and pretty difficult.
but i'll let you guys decide.
i'll edit this if you want a screenie, might put one up anyway.

as i said, i didn't have time to throw in a bunch of fancy-pants bombers, or even grenading enemies! (one thing i intended to do) oh well.
thnx for downloading, those that do!

Well the date the competition ends (5/24/04) has come and gone. I don't see any maps except mine and a non-working link lizardkid posted. So, do I win?
Yarik is away for 2 weeks so, if you have an entry, let me know.
