On unbent Endcaps the middleclick seems to work but to align and scale a texture on a (curved) mesh I don't use (S)SurfaceInspector but (P)Patch Properties.
Before I can start adjusting the texture I ...
- have nothing selected,
- middleclick on the mesh first,
- then select it with shift+leftclick,
- press P.
From there I begin by pressing the Natural-button but usually it needs to be scaled down a lot and adjusted all by hand. Only use the options on the right side (shift, scale, rotate) to adjust the texture. Note that you won't see any coordinates.
Once the texture is set right and you decide to change it later on follow the first three steps as described above. But then press S instead of P. Paste the full texturepath in the texture namebar and click Apply. This way you don't have to start adjusting the new texture all over again.
Probably the weirdest thing to texture is an Endcap (that is not bent). Once you try to adjust the texture (with either S or P) it jumps to an insane high scale. Only then you should use the middleclick on a nearby texture (as bdbodger showed).
For texturing the Endcap of a cylinder (think of a flat lid) I like to use a little trick. I place a brush of the same XY-dimensions opposite to the front of the Endcap and apply the texture on that brush. Once it's done I select the Endcap and middleclick on the texture of the brush to copy it from there. Again this only works well on Endcaps or other unbent meshes.
