go Yarik, this is exactly it.
In fact, yes, you do! You've got to pay for w!ndoze first to use them legally. Or even practically - what's the use of this when you've got no w!ndoze? Um, well, if you've got WINE or another 'alternative W32 API implementation'...
unless i'm extremely mistaken they're bundled with a bazillion other programs for $100 at the local staples here, XP, IE, Outlook Express, SP2 is free. SP2 includes security, added features, and a lot more. that's well worth $100 imo. but you dont need to pay to activate any of them, MSN, IE, outlook, anything.

Are you subscribed to Bugtraq? I guess not. Well, I am, and this M$ anti-spyware has been commented on as soon as it came out. I watched the discussion and people complained that it mistakes things like VPN services or content watching software - Netnanny etc. ( ) for spyware. There's also been a fuss that it deletes IE(xploiter), but I'd say that was a joke...
if you need to subscribe to it, this implies to me that it costs money.
Apart from that, there's one more thing. Do you really think that M$ documented all of w!ndoze's 'features'? Sure they didn't. There are some tricks they are the only ones that know about. That's probably why it seems to work better.
did KFC document how to make it's chicken? did McDonalds give away the recipe to it's secret sauce? does any place do that?

try going to "learn XP" it'll probably help you if you cant use Windows ;) it comes up first thing when Windows is installed and guides you through everything you need to know, other things are very easy to learn. i find it incredibly simple to click a button that says "Rename selected file" and to type in a new name.

FYI i dont use Google, google has enough people using an overrated program. i use www.searchalot.com , freelance, and it usually gets more of what i want anyway.

I really hate this discussion, but I cant help commenting it at the same time :)

About software costs: the last time I installed a LINUX ( Red Hat if my memory serves me right ) systen just to check it out: I was shocked by the stuff that was included. Web servers, mail servers, office applications, imaging, pesktop publishing, media players, Softare development tools, compilers.... and so on for a long time.... . And often 2-5 different brands of them as well. I made a quick calculation and came up with this approximation ( perhaps not so scientific, but just a rough guess ) : In the standard distribution there was software that would cost in the region of or just under 1.000.000 SEK ( divide that by ca:7 for dollars ) if you wanted to buy similar software for Windows.

And a LINUX distribution ( or BSD or whatever ) can be downloaded ( legally ) and installed ( legally ) for free.

Sure, I dont plan to set up a mail server or an encrypted network any time soon and so on, so I don't have any use for many of these programs, but if I had a corporation: I'd probably not think twice before selecting an Open Source alternative to windows ( I my guess is that MS gets most of its money from other corporations ).

it's all in choice, if you ARE a dev or advanced user, Linux/Unix might be for you. those were jsut my reasons for choosing Windows, nice interface, lots of tools i WILL use, (with the exception of Windows security, i use McAfee for that)

but if you like those Os's/explorers/mail systems better than universal ones it's all up to you.

The only thing outlook is universal for are the viruses. ;)

That's the point, Bjarne! You get ALL of this COMPLETELY FREE.

And those who say Linux is for l337s only - FFS! Get Mandrake (which IMHO sucks anyway :P Slackware rulez 8-) ) or Amigo and see for yourself it really DOES NOT take a geek to use this OS!

o i just like what everyone uses, had a good interface, good professional company, completely open-ended, easy to change etc. plus a frickin lot of Ms money goes to charity. cant say thats a plus imm (in my mind) but whatever.

keep being an open-source slave then, if you want it so badly.

They all had some problems or another... for example the 'leaving the PS2 on the carpet' will fry it in a matter of months. But personally, i didnt like the XBOX when it came out since it had HUGE controllers that required the whole family to play (Single Player!). And the fact that every game that came out for XBOX also came out for ps2 and gamecube.....

yea...lmao,yes that will happen to the ps2,it happened to me  :P

actually that isnt entirely true. XBox is the most singular platform i've evers seen. i dont recall many names, but Halo, Oddworld (?), i think Bloodrayne was XBox only??

XBox is a good system, i dont like the controllers, but the games and graphics were good, PS2 is my kind of system, i'm waiting for PS3 to come out for my next system. it's a very universal platform :)

well PC is the best platform but we're talking consoles. and if your PC sucks it's obviously not the best.

yeah, thats what all console games are. but they're designed with a different programming language and top of the line equip, which is why i like PC's, easier moddability, more support, more buttons ( ) etc etc...

EDIT: hog lol...
