Yea, and you are not the only one. I had the same problem and thousands of other people too (with updated bios etc).
I've heard a fix or patch would be released for this problem. Or search on google for a custom fix, there are several things which cause all the crashes. 'crash to desktop' is moslty caused by 'hyperthreading' (cpu) and could be fixed by turning the HT bios off, but even systems without hyperthreading got the 'crash to desktop' bug. And there are also many ppl with frozen screens. I also had frozen screens all the time, I thought my cpu or 3d-card was overheated all the time so I tried to remove dust between the airblades of my cpu. And I removed a side of my systemcupboard for 3 days so it would be a bit cooler inside it while playing, which worked fine. The systemcupboard is closed now and still doesn't crash anymore. I still don't know where the problem was, software or hardware . But the strainge thing about this was that I had no problems with other games.
Anyway 3 of my best friends also got BF2 now, and they got crashes too all the time. 1 guy even got crashes every 10 minutes. So I guess there has been made a very huge mistake by the makers of BF2.

Just got it... Can't wait to play online! the single player is OK, not great though - and I can't seem to get more than 15 bots
I only get the back to desktop crash in the menu after a game..

There is a known bug with linux servers that causes clients to crash to desktop.

I've managed to keep crashing down by not clicking madly on the menus. I just be patient and it works fine.

What's the highest team score you have seen in singleplay. I got 197-0 once, and I think I had 74 kills. BE ALL YOU CAN BE, BE THE TANK!

singleplay? about 60. I was just C4'ing the road, ambushing squads, playing turret on the humvee....

In singleplay, it depends on the difficulty. My highest on expert has only been 45 kills, with a score of 186-100. But easy is a whole other story.

Ah nevermind, my crash problems are back lol.

Anyway, what's your favorite map?
I mostly like 'mashtuur city' a 'blackhawk down' type of map. It's really cool for sniping (many roofs). Using helicopter in this map is cool, only the view distance is a bit too low because of the dust/fog but that doesn't matter. The streets are very drivable, which is cool for making patrols with cars etc. And if you're smart you can use all those buildings for having cover, or making ambushes or whatever. It's just a cool and realistic map for some nice battles .

Can one get more than 15 bots in a SP map?

Wow... i just spent four airplane trips high-altitude jumping. it took (no joke) 30 secs or more to get down, but it was amazing.

I went straight up, dropped bombs, and jumped out when i couldn't even se the ground for farplane... (i did get some kills off some bombs once)

It was... unimaginable. i never thought i'd see such detail and beauty in a game. I spent about three minutes total jsut taking in how it ran like butter, even though i was watching the ENTIRE map. i just cant describe how cool that was to me... just, wow.

On the upshot i captured two bases solo this way >)

Maybe i need to go into the Army as a jumper.

Has anyone learned how to remove the red "limit" lines from the demo sp map--so I can explore the whole thing?

i think they're just and out trigger bounds or something, so unless they have a very moddable game (like MOH) i dont think you'll be able to.

i think its FRICKIN SWEET. Im an amazing pilot of both chopper and jet if i do say so myself. Ya know that bridge over the river near river outpost and that warehouse? i can fly under that no problem in the Cobra, Blackhawk, AND the Harriers i love that game sooooo much
