It's always nice when the guy is dumber than you, and you can do something like that and outsmart them. Or use really big words and then the get confused, then you RUN!!

In situations like this it's probably best to just stay low for awhile. No I don't mean hiding from these guys but if you can and it's not too much trouble, be the smartest and take another route to school/work. If the guy keeps bugging you (or tries to) then maybe you can reason with one of his buddies and talk sense to him.
As for streetfights it's always hard to tell what you're getting yourself into, but streetfights usually mean it's you against a majority. I've been in a few over the years and it wasn't exactly fun. I clearly remember a time when I got into a fight over a girl with an obviously experienced fighter. We both threw and blocked a few punches and luckily both decided to not let it escalate and I walked away. I know how to defend myself and have been doing Kyokushinkai karate for about 6 years now and recently started with Jeet KuneDo (which focusses on street/dirty fighting). The main reason for these sports for me is 'to be prepared' of course, but I definitely also do it because I like to be in shape and I simple enjoy it more than I do fitness. I also like the way it seems to unwind me when I'm tense. Punching and kicking the heavy bag can be very satisfying;-)
So yes, in theory I'd be able to fight off an opponent and get away with it, but still I always get the proverbial 'knot in the stomach' when a situation asks for it or is getting close to it. The problem is that on the street there are no rules and things can get out of hand in the blink of an eye. One minute you think the fight is over, the next someone else jumps your back. And I don't even mention the use and possession of weapons these days, you'll be surprised how many people carry a knife with them. The other problem is deciding when to throw the first punch. Do I really need to get into physical contact or do I give the guy some more time to back out first? But at the same time I'm already thinking of a way to take him down fast.
This all runs through my mind in a splitsecond and an impending physical fight can be a very intimidating situation for people who don't practice some form of martial arts. They usually aren't familiar with a standoff and at that point I could have the advantage. I think we've all seen guys who try to intimidate others by walking up close to them and making all kinds of gestures Muhammed ali style. But in fact they don't think about their defense at that time and one little nod of your head is enough to break a nose.
But if you want some tips for situations like this, all I can say is think fast and try to stay calm. Don't worry if your heart starts pounding fast, it's a good sign and means your body is alert. If you can dodge the fight do it, but with style. However if a fight is inevatible then don't hold back, fight dirty and get it over with quickly and don't hang around. You don't want a crowd of spectators as some of them might see you as the troublestarter.
Oh yeah, don't fight, play Mohaa!
