multi-computer compiling

i'm fixing an older computer for a purely working purpose, it wont run games or anything, it's going to do all the dull work and keep all my school stuff etc.

i'm going to network my two computers together. and when that's successful, i want to be able to send maps from here to the older one so it can compile or so it can take maps from here and compile, since i really dont want to mess with wasting HDD (it's only got 2 gb free so it's precious stuff) with maps and batch files in that one.

clarification:

i want maps from the computer i'm on now to be able to be compiled on the older one, but i want the .map and all the compiled products on this one. and i really dont want to install MOH on the other one.

so i just want the other one to run MBuilder and use it's processing time so i can stil map or whatever on this one.

how would i go about doing it? i saw something about someone who had a network and they had to fix MBuidler's settings so it wouldnt but i cant find that now...

think, u'd better install mohaa on that old pc too. Else imho u'd have to leave both turned on all the time, u won't be allowed to reboot ur newer pc and so on.
And: older (slower) pcs will need MUCH more time to compile than newer (& faster) ones, so u rather might want to map on the older one and compile on the faster one...

I havnt tried this but maybe u can make a "dummy" folder on the old one and have that as your maps source for MBuilder and just put ur .maps in there and MAYBE that will work.... worth a try right?

hey yeah, maybe i can just put .map's i nthe dummy folder and throw all the compile files (MOHLight etc) into there too, then have the finished game directory point to new comp... that'd be nice, then could i turn off new comp and leave old comp to process it's little circuts away?

yea,i used to have 4 pc's all linked together.the way i had it tho u needed an extra ethernet card.pnp method im pretty sure it was called.but it was faster than using the IP to transfer files n such.i even transfered MOHAA to all the comps from 1 at a very suprisingly fast rate

a good way to transfer berween comps that are in the same room would be to just get some USB to USB cables and link all the comps... or just make a little LAN using a router but like Beret said, may be slower. The best way in my opinion would be to get FireWire to FireWire cables (if ur comp supports firewire) and use that. VERY fast :) good luck

well i really dont need all of them to have net and probably dont want them to.

i think once i research enough stuff on LAN cables and their speeds etc then i'll see just how useful and fast it is, etc.

so, i know i sound liek a noob, but will USB's hooked into each computer and maybe like a modem or something (like i said, i'm a noob to this) actually link the computers once i set up the network via software? i remember hearing it was much harder than that.

pk3

You would not need the whole game on the old computer, just all the pk3s that have the textures and models.

well if your running windows XP (which i doubt) you dont need any extra software you just get male to male USB cables, plug them into the correct ports and then the comp should automatically find the new connection between the computers and you would be able to transfer between them using the new connection but im not familiar with other OSs other than windows so I dont know what to do for other OSs or whether or not you even need to do anything. I think it works like a seperate HDD type thing or like a thumbdrive, it reads it as like a seperate drive that you can copy and paste things only on a much higher scale... right but i think (and hope) you get the point. well my comp is running mad slowe and it only happens when im on this website (really really really odd) and sad  cya guys later
