Rockbound - New OBJ/DM map (Revised!)

Post by panTera »

NEWS: I have fixed some bugs and a newer version is available. The links are updated. If you have downloaded the map already before April 9th, please be my guest and download the map again to get the newer version. (Thanks to Kalti and Bjarne for uploading the files).

Changes made :
===========
- Some patch meshes showed gaps with 'Curve detail-High'. I now used brushes instead
- Removed the ammo and health
- Player could get stuck on some of the ladders when jumping on them in combination with USE...; now fixed
- Turned the single steps of the 'stokerpits' into three steps staircases to avoid having to jump out
- Re-aligned some textures while I was on it

Hey thanks for sharing it Pantera, looks very nice.
Well done mate!

**EDIT**
I just tried the SH version mate and it crashes back to desktop while trying to parse your custom ubersound, I looked at your ubersound and the explicit naming of the dirs ie; dm/..... obj/.mapname are the cause I am thinking. Was the SH version tested? Maybe it's a quirk of my machine :?

You bet the SH version was tested... I don't get it.:( I've seen more maps doing it this way (eg. mp_sandsturm_obj). Really hope it's something on your machine and not the script. If for some strange reason it is the script I need to fix it right away before more peeps download it. I'll remove the SH link until it's sorted then...

I decided to move this thread to the news forum because of the exceptional quality of the map :) .... I hope you don't mind

Any servers yet? If none maybe I can host one from my pc for a few hours sometime :)

Thanks for the great map panTera!

It's a blast :D

One minor mesh 'gap' but outside the playable area (dm version)

It ok!! :D My sincere apologies mate... Man what a day Iv'e had, just after reporting the map crashing my system crashed and i lost heaps of windows system files in the process, I have just managed to get my self back online again.

Anyway that's another story... As for the map it works fine as it is, but just now I found out why it was crashing at loadup. I have many maps in main that contain custom ubersounds, good old SH just decided enough is enough and refused to load any more aliases. This could possibly happen on dedicated servers that have many maps with ubers as well...

The moral of the story is......... try to use as many stock aliases for sounds as you can before deciding to add custom ones for SH to choke on.

Again sorry to cause any panic, but at least I discovered the cause and could report it back.

Thank you very much guys. All feedback is appreciated.
(JV, thanks for moving it to news.) I was thinking of boldly mailing some clans myself to see if they would be interested in trying it out. I might just do that.

Rookie One, Grassy: thanks for clearing up the 'bug report'. Grassy you got me worried there for awhile but as they say it's always better to be save than sorry. I've restored the link again. I appreciate it when people take some time to help. 8-)

The quality of this map is amazing. It looks great, it has great FPS, and from what I can deduct from the design: great playability. Well in level with any stock map, and in my opinion better than most stock maps. Amazing work indeed Pantera!

This map just feels... right :D

Looks great, realistic - lovely mix of heights and some good angles and curves!

Okay, so that's the mesh gap Kalti was talking about. Dangit! I'm seeing this for the first time.
You see the problem is I can not "lock" the level of detail of the meshes. (it's not LOD where you can lock vertices). Most of the rock formations are (deformable) patchmeshes and the ground is made of normal brushes. I forced the meshes to the lowest detail possible so they would look more like brushes. When a mesh gets more detailed it slightly expands and gets deformed.
However I did check with max detail settings to see if everthing would stay in its place. But as the screenshot shows that's obviously not the case:( To be honost I don't know how to fix it without rebuilding the entire rock areas (which I won't be doing).
(I also read on the Mohreloaded forum some people didn't like the small health pack? Trust me that won't encourage "camping" in the objective version since it's in a remote spot from which you can not see the objective.) In DM mode it could be a problem but then again you can't stop people from camping. My main conecrn right now are the meshes.

On the one hand I am all for fixing as many bugs as I can, but on the other hand I don't want "older" versions of the map floating around on the net and cause confusion.
So, what do I do now?!
Do I temporarily remove the map, try and fix those few things and release it again?
