Suggestion for a model?

As some of you may know by now: I'm trying to learn to model in Blender.

So have you got a suggestion for a model that you would like to see done?
Suggestions paired with refterence images/blueprints are appreciated.

Here is the last thing I did: A beast mecha:

Hehe obviously some plane :P

There are tons of very good blueprints here: http://airwar.ru/other/drawe.html

P.S. awesome beast!

Thanx! :D

Hmm... a plane... good idea. Lots of roundes shapes to battle with in the quest for a low poly count...

Now I know! There were some downed english bonbers somewhere in the Rjukan history...

Lets see, yes: Halifax-bombers, B-17 and B-24 bombers. One of them should be a great test of my abilities.

Do you have a polygon count budget in mind :?:

That link you gave me is awsome. Thanx! :D

Hmmm I think somewhere between <number of engines> * 500 and <number of engines> * 1000, so for a B-17, B-24 or Halifax this is 2000-4000 polies. :) (that's with a minimum of poly-detail).

Here is a status report:

Poly count at this stage is 1400. Left to do is landing gears and the 2 missing tail wings. Oh and about 6-8 gun barrels sticking out everywhere :)

Very nice :) , and impressive poly count :D

Looks like you need some smoothing groups tough ;) (not sure what they're called in blender, but it helps surely)

I have trouble with smoothing groups. I can smooth faces fine, but I still havent found a way to assign the smoothing to separate groups. In short: I cant make creases between 2 smooth areas yet :)

Anyway, model is done:

And the really sick thing: its just 1789 polygons. 8-) :D

Now on to texturing ( and R.T.F.M. to find how this smoothing stuff works in blender )

Any special texturing wishes? Country markings, colors, and so on?

Impressive modelling again :D only the main gear seems too 'solid', but the general looks are very close to the real one and with this poly count I consider that quite an achievement ;) well done :)

Uhmm I think they either came in green / yellow or a silverish scheme.. both would look great I think. As for country markings I think only the US used the B-17 to any extent :)

Yes, I think I'll make the "Memphis Belle".

What started me up was the "Blender Noob to pro" tutorial that was the book of the month at WikiBooks.
The Blender application is available at http://www.blender3d.org/

And no: I don't do models per request. But it only took me a week to get to the point I am now by reading tutorials, so go ahead and try it yourself.

Hmm... jv: the B17 is rather huge. Is a 1024*1024 texture OK?

As you can deduct from this 512*512 UV-map, there wont be a lot of detail at this level...

thnx

EDIT:
not to intentionally be a bother but the links on the blender website are dry. The Windows Zipfile and the Installer dont come up when i click them. It brings up a new FireFox window for it but the Download manager never pops up and the window appears to be trying to stay active as though its trying to bring it up but it never does.

a map with this - a nice undestroyed village with a high skybox.

about five minutes into it - the ground rumbles then starts to shake -
100s of b-17s flying overhead start dropping payloads.

give this one shelter , places to hide.

the city is totally destroyed, bombed out and burning at the end.
