Anyone good with windows networking?

Post by Splaetos »

Annoying the hell out of me, I can get to the point where I can see both computers in the workgroup I made, but cant access the other one....

seen two errors one stats cant 'reach' it, other says 'path not found' pretty similar errors.

Is the other computer set up to share? Your admin computer can only access the other if it is set to share its hard drive with others on the network.

Yes you can only access shared directories also it maybe a firewall problem on the computers try createing a shared directory on one of the computers dissconnect the router from the internet ( just to be safe ) and drop the firewalls on the computers includeing the windows firewall if you have it enabled and see if you can copy a file from the share directory from the other computer . If that works you might try to configure the firewalls of the computers to allow the ip of the other computer to access your computer . Some firewalls have a lan option to set an automatic rule to allow lan connections .

hmmm... i should check zone alarm(free version) downstairs. There are shared folders down there.

Up here I use avast anti-virus and the built in windows firewall behind the router.

Thanks for the input guys.

with windows all you do is right click on a folder and select properties then use the shareing tab . I have the windows firewall turned on and have some computers on my home netowork that have no problem connecting with each other but I had to set my other firewall to allow the connection to the other computers . It maybe zone alarm that is giveing you your problem maybe create a rule that allows all protocalls for the remote ip 192.168.*.* , actually it may depend on the type of router that remote ip range is used for private ips assigned by a router but maybe not all of them use that , check your ip address and see if it starts with 192.168

router is a linksys 192.168.1.*

Still trying to figure out if I can set each computer to a static IP behind the router, this one tends to change(it hasnt yet since last install) but if zone alarm is the issue i can prolly open it up to the range behind the router?

at one point, I did get this computer to connect to the other one, using xp pro, but my latest attempt with xp wasnt working, and ive never gotten x64 to even connect to the workgroup and see the other computer >.<

(I dont have a serial for xp pro, so was just testing with it... I like most everything better on x64, but F.E.A.R. runs like a monster on xp, and like crap on x64.... avg fps difference ... 25ish fps on x64 -- 70-80(full settings) on xp(tweaked 7.77 nvidia drivers).)

I use XP x64 on one of the computers XP home and XP Pro on the other two they all connect fine . I don't think that is the issue if you can't see the other computers try running the network wizard again and use the setup home network option and connect to the internet through a residential gateway ( the router) option . I would dissconnect the router from the internet first and drop the firewalls on the other computers if you have problems and you should be able to see them . Then make a shared directory on one of the computers and add a file to it and try to copy it from one of the other computers then enable it's firewall and see if the other computer can copy the file again , if not tweak the firewall untill it can . The drop the firewall on that computer and create a shared folder with a file in it on one of the other computers and reapeat the test first with no firewall on that other computer then with . Sounds like a bit of work but it maybe the best way . I think I read somewhere about putting your lan in the trusted zone in zonealarm but I don't use that so I don't know .
