start reading these....
nemesis's tuts
mansteins's tuts
mix and match them but start off with nemesis's.
you gotta pay your dues somewhat. trial and error is the best way. posting a lot of questions as you go on here or TMT is also good.

nah i don't know nemesis personally. you can post questions here. the point is: 99% of the members here will be glad to help you but a lot of members put a lot of time making tuts and all of us have paid our dues with researching and attempting first. no offense but you've gotta get your feet wet sometime . (i've got 20 bucks says he replies stating he doesn't plan on using any water textures so "why would he get his feet wet ?")

lol PKM...
mapping's an art and nobody can out and say "here's how you do it." there's a lot of aspects to cover and a lot of tweaks and tricks that we can tell you about, but we cant make the "Ultimate Guide To Mapping". Your best bet is going to manstein's and nemesis (however alternative his style is) and hte tuts here at .map.
But i suggest you just play around making basic buildings or grounds or streets or whatever you want, and when you get a problem or a compiler error or want to know how to make something happen come ask about it

bingo, that's all that needed to be said. with this influx of new mappers posting the same ''what do i do to learn how to map'' question, i was trying to think of how to put it all in one paragraph. the lizardkid is really the lizardking. speaking of which, i need a header from a website you might have or a sig/banner from you to put in my stadium map (that now may not see the light of day, at least not in it's original theme). i've got hogleg, jv, and a host of other ''regulars'' but not anything from you. would like to have your name in there.

Senzaffine We were all "noobs" to begin with m8.
As far as i'm aware..none of us have been snapped up by software companies banging our door down to employ us.
Generaly we all do this (mapping) cos were either bored/love the game/creative and want to share.
Like PKM and lizard said...its something you have got to learn and then , even if you do learn the basics you have to then develope a flair and style of your own.
I recall around 4 years ago building my own little room! it was not pretty it was not great....but it was my room! ..to me that at the time was the best room in the world!
Start small and have aspirations to better what you did yesterday.
Thats my humble advice.

jeezuz i remember my first room, i freaked because i hadn't put a sky box in and also couldn't find the german sheppard models. they were '' 20' " above me, i hadn't gotten used to the different axis yet. oh and texturing only one side........forget it, i'd put a brush on the outside wall of a building to cover up the texture i had used on the inside.
