Have you guys heard of this? It's an RTS (or maybe rather a MMORTS - it supports up to 100 players!) with a strong accent on the tactical aspect of the game (no resource gathering). I found this game by accident in the Linux Game Tome (which, despite its name, also contains games that run on wincrap; all of these games are FREE!), gave it a spin and got pretty much addicted. :)

It's still not tactical enough (you can't use the terrain and buildings tactically, there are no advanced units commands), but it's already a good game and on the best way to become even better. :) It has very nice graphics:

The point of the game is to capture outposts by moving your units over a concrete pad near the factory building. Factories provide you with new units. You start with a small force at a random spawnpoint. Every time you lose your whole army you get a new one. There are a few servers on the net for online play, however, it's quite pointless for a newbie to join a game that has already been going on for a while, as the players who have already been playing for a while usually control a few outposts. It takes a joint, allied strike of a couple of players to take such a player out.

Nevertheless, it's a nice game and I suggest you to try it. :)

imo MMORTS's would be the ultimate game. i mean, RPG's are cool and all, gathering stuff for one ultimate character, but running the ultimate army against other players? it's ownage in it's purest form!

i'm checking it out just for hte pure gameplay aspect, even if does come from a hackware-oriented site.
EDIT:

looks like they need to learn the #1 rule of making a game: Distribute to the largest possible audience. Get to minorities last.
It couldnt hold focus on my comp, it would flicker between the desktop and main menu in an annoying way, the game cursor didnt move and none of the buttons worked because of it. not to mention it also reset my resolution and as a result crammed all my icons into a small space.

remind me not to download half-finished material..

Lol, you seem to have weird problems with all kinds of software. ;) The game runs flawlessly for me under both Linux and wincrap.

I just wish I could use the terrain tactically. :? What's the point of hiding in a village if the units can still shoot over the buildings without them affecting their aim?

i've never had THAT problem before, it either stays minimized and it's easily fixed by maximizing or alt/tabbing. or it blacks the screen, which is just it changing display modes and always works after about 5seconds. this is like it's trying to overlay the desktop with it's main menu...

EDIT:
And mysteriously, after turning off the comp for the night and returning to it the next day, it works.
:o

So what server do you play on?

coincidentally, the same holds true for products developed for Windows or Mac that are ported to Linux. if it's not developed for your platform it isn't going to perform as well.

crapintosh, wincrap, crapware anyone? lets just go back to DOS.
