Company of Heroes

Company of Heroes is a new RTS (Real Time Strategy) WW2 game that just came out. On the TV commercials it looks like an FPS game, but its more like Age of Empires 3 -- build stuff and capture points. There are a lot of movies in the singleplayer game, and that is what is shown in the commercials.

Its not a bad game! But, it is very different from what you may be use to. Its not 2D -- you can zoom in, pan, and rotate the camera. Its also not easy! you have to think about every move you make, watch all your groups at the same time, and keep an eye on the enemy troops.

All in all, its got everything you'd want in a WW2 game -- lots of action, explosions, history, chatter, and player options.

Here is the web site. http://www.companyofheroesgame.com/

glad you posted this info tl because i thought it was supposed to be a FPS according to how they shot the commercial and everytime i saw that sgt. crouching while he calls his troops foward i could only think : ''they're promoting this POS ? the player model there looks like a plastic armyman.'' and the shot of the jeep with the machine gunner made it look like the player was on crack.

they really need to reshoot the ads for that game .

I loaded it a few weeks ago. Soon as I found out it wasn't a first person shooter, and you had to do so much to TRY and have fun, I took it off my machine. Had it on for about three minutes.

i got the demo in last month's PCGamer, but i'm not a huge RTS fan so it's on hold. I prefer shooter/rpg/crime. A little RTS is fine, but it has to ring right, like C&C.

$50

The game cost about $50, yet it only has around 16 singleplayer missions. There are skimish maps too, but some of those are the same as singleplayer. I have a pretty good computer (3.4Ghz), and the load times are very long (3-4 minutes) for me. But, the graphics are worth the wait. Multiplayer requires downloading extra files from the company.

One thing I hate is that you have to micro manage each group of men. They will shoot by themselves, but you have to order them to throw granades. And, if they get pinned down, they wont even do that.

I almost gave up on the game too. I did the training and then lost about 6 skimish games in a row. But, after doing the singleplayer missions, I finally started winning a few skimishes (on easy).

Here is a spoilervideo of the first singleplayer mission.

I finally got enough Christmas gift cards to buy the retail version of the game. Its a good thing too because I just found out the game can be played in Multiplayer Coop Mode!

Before a multiplayer game starts, you can switch all the humans to one team and populate the other team with AI (easy, normal, hard, or expert). You can, of course, also add or subtract friendly AI from the human team. Use voice chat, like "Roger Wilco", and you will be in Coop Heaven!
