New Mapper Requesting Help

Post by Sprog »

New mapper here :D

just been working my way through ur tutorials (they were great thx) just got a few questions i need help with though

im thinking of building a multiplayer OBJ rural map (i.e. no buildings), just a field with lots of bushes and trees and an objective

1) Is it a good idea to build a map of this type? or is the FPS very poor?

2) How do you create tall grass and bushes (like in the map "The Hunt")? and how do u make it so you can run through them?

Any help wud b greatly appreciated

The Farm

There is a hidden singleplayer mission in the game called "The Farm". To play it you have to type "map m4L0" in the console. The .map file for that mission is in the docs folder of MOHAATools. If you load it into radiant, you can filter out stuff from your "view" and see how they did the landscape. You can also copy and paste stuff from it to your map.

Note: An object-free multiplayer version of the .map (mp-m4l0.pk3) can be downloaded from Wacko's Recycling Bin web site.

MOH's engine is not the best for rendering large, outdoor scenes. unless you can break it up with large hills, trenches, cliffs, dense forests, or a close fog it's not a good idea, unless you're talking about a very small field.

hedgerows are also a blessing to larger outdoor scenes, although they're a tactical nightmare; don't overuse them or you might as well have an indoor map with some low walls; hard to flank, easy to take cover behind, good camping spots.

btw, Welcome to .map!

ive had a play around with the m4l0.map and it gave me a few more ideas thx

only problem is i cant find tht map in my MOHAAtools/docs folder :?
the only .map file in tht folder is called test_firefight.map and wen it try to load it up in Radient it crashes :(

the MOHAAtools is wherever you installed Radiant when you downloaded it, if the Docs folder isn't there it's best to just reinstall; although after a while you wont need them.

as for crashing, try removing some custom .pk3's, if Radiant has to load too much it'll crash. Usually skinpacks and texture packs are the biggest causes.

ive created the terrain for my map (6144x5120) using the Greyscale image thing. Is this ok to use? and for a map of this size?

well ive done it, and it sort of works, the problem im having is that the sides of my trench walls are not vertical as i wud like, they are angled (see image)

LOD Terrain wont do streight sides, so you have to use brushes, or patch mesh (curve menu), for the walls.
