Texturing Terrain

HOW can I texture terrain to get e.g. a road with 256 units (or even less) wide? As far as I can see, these terrain patches must be 512x512 and can hold just one texture each?! So using a "road-texture", I get TWO roads instead of one...

Use patch meshes instead for roads...
