$world farplane 3000....... or what ever
$world farplane color .33 .33 .33...... this should be grey if I remember right.
3000 would be the distance you see before the fog takes effect. less, it gets closer, denser.
I use to use mapbuilder for compiling.... look at the settings there.... also use search function here...... should be plenty on the subject..
I don't map any more so really can't provide enough info.

Both.... while in radiant with a brush selected hit the "N" key. This will bring up the entity inspector. There are 2 boxes on the bottom. In the top one type world farplane and in the value box type 3000. then hit enter. ANd then you can try farplane color in the top box and .33 .33 .33 in the value box. Hit enter, deselect brush and save and compile.
You can script this in also......
The light thing. If you want an even "light" across the entire map select a brush, hit "N" and in the upper box type ambientlight..... all one word. In the value box type 70 70 70 for full sun. You can try 10 10 10 to see what the difference will be.
It's been a while so I hope this info is correct.

Did you have a brush selected while you were doing it like you did with the light ?
also try worldfarplane...... all one word and try $worldfraplane and farplane
