lod terrain mesh

Post by davetherave »

is it possible to convert a lod terrain mesh back into regular brushs? those of you familiar with quake3 terrain mapping i mean regular worldpawn brushes than will open normal q3radient. i just prefer the old way of creating terrain and would like to play around with my terrain in other programs. basically i just want to take each of the triangles and turn them into a regular brush

No I don't think anyone wrote a converter. However, it should be possible from the terraindef information in a map file. It's just noone bothered yet. :?

Anyway, mostly LOD terrain is superior to brush terrain.

I haven't gotten to terrain yet, and have no clue how LOD works (yet!!), but you could try taking the terrain and CGS subtracting it from a regular brush (and then subtract that one from another to get the original terrain shape)..
Not saying that'll work, just something that popped to mind :?

I'm not sure about this so correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't EasyGen create the terrain as brushes?
(See this tutorial: http://users.1st.net/kimberly/Tutorial/terrain.htm)
If it does it's probably not the best way to go for terrain, but if I understand your question this might be something to try out. (I used the program some time ago and if I remember correctly I got me a huge amount of triangled brushes).

Yes that's right, it will create brushes for you.

Therefore it has a larger performance impact than LOD terrain.
