Help with Weather effects!

Post by burlyboy »

Hey guys! Great forum. I'm just starting (re: Nubie) out building a new map (of my neighbourhood) for team dm. I have a couple of questions though that I was hoping for some help on ...

-- my map and compiled bsp is in the Mohaa map\dm folder along with my .scr. I can't get any weather effects working when I start a mu game with the map. No rain or fog, sounds or otherwise. Other sounds are OK, like gun, voice, footsteps, etc. I've been using the tutorial.
The regular maps/dm/tdm all work fine with rain/snow, etc.

-- I've added a trigger with volumedamage but this doesn't work either. (based on the tutorials I've found).

-- what's the best way to build terrain? large brushes or smaller ones? How would you connect the brushes together after using LOD terrain; to avoid cracks (that you fall into - into the void. lol)

thnx!!

About your last question: use LOD terrain whenever possible. You can make it line up with regular brushes although that's a pretty hard thing already.

thnx. That's what I gathered. When you create some LOD terrain, do you just place objects/brushes (ie buildings, fences, etc.) just directly on top of the terrain? What about the ability to raise terrain... it causes the terrain to go "into" houses, etc.. do you just have to be carefull?

thnx

I got the fog to work - had to add "worldspawn" key pairs instead of using the script file (the tutorials talk about adding stuff to the .scr file).
How do I know if the maps .scr file is loading with the map?
Also, I'm not testing it via .pk3 file, just the compiled file in the maps/dm folder - would this have any affect? I was under the impression that the .pk3 file was just for distribution ease....

1st question: you can check the console for errors, like:
Script Error^
blahblahblah something.scr was not properly loaded
2nd question: you can put your maps in the mohaa\main\maps folder. I've always been doing that and everything works fine. When releasing your map, just put all these map files into a pk3.
Live to map, not map to live.

To see if your script is loading, in the console you will see something like "Adding script: 'dm/snow.scr'". If you want to make double sure, add something like this to your script 'println "My map's script is executing at this time" '. This will show up in the console window.

thanks for all the great tips guys... now I've just got to find time...
'As disturbing as it may seem, there are apparently some people who see clowns not as they are, but instead see them in a rather twisted way. These tragic misfits labour under the impression that clowns are somehow friendly, happy and even funny figures of entertainment, when any right-minded person can clearly see that they are in fact darkly sinister beings with their freakishly painted faces and grim humourless antics.'

I haven't gotten too much into sound (Im pretty new also) but I believe you are gonna have to work with the ubersound.scr file. You'll need to edit some lines in there to 'allow' them to work in MP maps.

The other two I just started playing with, so no clue
