When good mappers and scripters come together.......

Post by mohaa_rox »

When good mappers and scripters come together, what will be the end result? A perfect map!

So I'm looking for a good mapper to form a team with me so we can make some excellent maps.

Cheers.

p.s btw, i'm not implying i'm a good scripter! :P

Rox, I am maybe the worst scripter in the world, this map I am working on is gonna be good, I am working hard at optimising everything on it, I want it to be a TOW map, I know its gonna cause me pain to try and script it. Ya want to do this with me ? The maps gonna take quite a while yet to finish but the end result may well be a perfect map ( if the scripts work ).

it's not a bad idea, however i gave up on making the perfect map long time ago. Even if you have a good scripter work together with a good mapper it's still no guarantee the map will be any good. If the idea of the map (objective, the location) isn't good enough then the map isn't going to be anything special. Over the years I have read countless articles on the "what makes the perfect map"-subject and it didn't get me anywhere. One thing I do know is people will notice whether a map has quality or not. Then the personal taste comes into play. If you made one hellova map which is technically perfect and visually stunning, even then some people will hate it because they get killed most of the times when playing your map. There's just too many factors, but timing is very important. I've seen it many times that some very nice custom maps were released years after the game came out. These maps were better than some of the original and first custom maps but got very little attention (still active mappers aside).
Sure, I try to do my best to make a solid piece of mapping goodness, but I also try not to count on anything. I work a lot with computers and I find making (good) maps the most coolest but absolutely hardest thing to do.

Of course the Perfect Map is a very subjective thing. I only really like objective or tug of war maps, with a free for all you dont really get to use tactics, I guess I just like having a mission rather than chaos ( and with no respawn I can smoke while I wait). The map I am building I think perfectly suits what we try to achieve, its the Peenemude Research Facility. I have so far constructed the interior of the assembly building, theres so much more to do, I am worried about the outdoor parts of the map and also all the tow scripting ( I can't script ).

Heres a basic view of my what I am trying to do

here's some more good reading, if you like to read about map design:
Levelord, Ritual Entertainment
Cliff Bleszinski, Digital Extremes

(...actually it DID help me a lot! Not to make a "perfect" map, but to understand the process of making a map from start to finish and what aspects to focus on.)

Don't read Cliff Bleszinski's, you'd end up with colored lights everywhere :?.
