Duplicate brushes !?!?!?!?!

Alright, this is getting rediculous. Every so often I get this problem. I go in to work on a map and apply or change textures and find that I can't do either because I somehow have duplicate brushes. I mean, the whole map is duplicated!? :? What is going on? I'm thinking it might be that I may reload the map because of one reason or another and it doesn't clear what was on the screen before it loads up. Is this happening to anyone else or am I starting a new trend here? It is fustrating to have to go in and delete all the duplicate brushes 'cuz sometimes there is a whole lotta map made already. Is there a setting that I can change or what? Why is Radiant messing with my mind like this? Anyone?!?

:? indeed.

You did not make all your brushes twice ;) ?

Nope. It's just real odd that it happens. It doesn't happen that much, but when it does, it makes life a little bit miserable. I think it's the thing about saving your map, then adding or changing things and then wanting to go back to where you last saved it. The last time it happened which was just the other day, I had just re-opened the map after doing some things that I didn't like or want. So instead of deleting the things that I didn't like, I just tried to re-open the map from the last saved spot without closing down Radiant. That may be the problem, I don't know. Any suggestions?

If you had selected some brushes and open another map, radiant asks whether it should copy the selection. If you agree, those brushes will be in the new map exactly where they were in the one before.

Could this has happend to you?

it could be that you are hitting the spacebar (which copies any selected brushes) accidentally

But then, the selection wouldn't be exactly where the original brushes are!?

if you use ctrl+z (undo) after applying a texture it brings back the texture but on a new brush in the exact same place of the icky texture you wanted to undo... so there are now 2 brushes and they will probly z fight the hell outta eachother... maybe thats it... dunno.. it happens to me then i dont notice it untill i do a full compile for 2 hours and load the game and get pissed cuz there is a picture of hitler or something z fighting with my wall or what ever... lol

There is a nice tool that Balr gave me, I don't have it available for you to download - but send him a PM and see if he can send it. It removes duplicate planes. Someone else here might have the plug in also

Two brushes over each other are known as an 'intersection'.

A duplicate plane means two overlapping faces of one brush.

Well, I'm not sure how it is happening but you all have some good points. I know it isn't the spacebar thing 'cuz like Wacko said, it wouldn't be in the same place as the brush you are duplicating. I'm currently making a rocket facility and at one point, I had all the walls, fixtures, everything duplicated like I had two buildings in the same place! Anyway, I guess I will have to just keep a close eye on what seems to be happening and hope I catch it so I can post it here to help out anyone else who has this same problem. Sheesh, this makes me feel like such a noob for some reason! Thanks all!

Oh, btw, I know about this and have seen it but always select no if I have things that I don't want copied into the map I'm opening or yes if I do. I haven't noticed if this is the problem or not. Maybe there is a setting in Radiant that you can turn that off so you don't accidently do it or something?!?!?! :? Anyway, thanks again!

Don'T think there is a way to turn this off, you'll have to get used to press ESC before opening another map.

i'm not 100% certain this is right but i'll continue...

a duplicate plane is created when 1 or more of the faces on the brush overlaos a previous face from the same brush, i'll try a little diagram...

if you start with a standard brush (cube) and then move the vertices over already depicted vertices you will end up with just 3 vertices (in that view, really a prism) this doesn't mean that the additional face has been removed it's overlaying one of the others were the vertices moved to

if you want to create triangular/prism brushes you will need to change it 1st of all in the brush menu, now 4 the diagram... hmmm...

1--------2
I...........I
I...........I
I...........I
I...........I
3--------4 these show the vertices 1,2,3 and not surprisingly :P 4

if 2 is moved to 1, it'd look like this..

1,2
I\
I..\
I....\
I......\
3------4 meaning vertices 2 is still there, so face 1:4 is now being duplicated by 2:4

i'm reading this back now and i really hope i can understand what i'm trying 2 say :D

what about this situation? Isn't this duplicate planes?

yes and also that situation, but it's very very rare u'll get in2 the situation where the vertices is in the centre of a face could reach another face, it's more likely that in that situation 2 will be the vertices for a central point from another view (if ya get what i mean)
